We are using Book 1 of Spelling Wisdom as well as Using Language Well for my 9 year old daughter. We are on lesson 14. I noticed that until lesson 72 she is asked to transcribe rather than having me dictate the passage to her. I assume this means that until lesson 72 I simply have her focus on careful copying and don’t need to require that she write it down from memory? Do you suggest just transcribing it once or should I have her do this a few times before moving on to the next lesson (i.e. 2 or 3 times in the course of a week). Until adding the Using Language Well book this year I had not realized this was the suggested introduction into book 1 so I just wanted to confirm this was the intent.
Yes, we’re recommending that you use Book 1, Lessons 1–71 for transcription in third grade (or so) in order to make a smooth and gradual transition into dictation at fourth grade (ish). Be sure to read the description at the top of page 62 in the Using Language Well teacher book; it will explain that gradual process. This blog post also gives an overview of the natural progression.
I would suggest transcribing the passage once with full attention and best effort.
Very helpful (as usual Sonya). Thank you so very much. Let me please take this opportunity to tell you how much my homeschooling atmosphere has improved over the last year since I have found your website and worked to implement Charlotte’s methods into our daily routine. We have all blossomed under her wise models. Not only that but I have been personally grateful for the wonderful curriculums that you and your team have made available. From History to Handwriting and Handicrafts, Shakespeare to Spelling and Science, Poetry and more, we are using and loving the materials you have produced and sold. I am a better teacher because of the work you do and my children will reap the rewards from your labor. Many blessings!
