If my children have not done Spelling Wisdom before, should I start with book one or just jump right in according to grade.  For example, my soon to be 8th grader, would he begin Spelling Wisdom 3?

Where your child begins in Spelling Wisdom depends more on his ability to spell than on his grade level. The grade levels are only given as suggestions.

In the sample of Spelling Wisdom there are examples of exercises from near the beginning and end of each book. Keeping in mind that each book covers two years of dictation, look at each exercise and determine your child’s ability to confidently spell the words in the samples. I would look at the sample exercises for books 2 and 3. As an example, if your child could confidently spell all the words at the beginning of book 2, but not at the end, then you would choose book 2 and start somewhere in the middle. Ideally, your child should be able to spell most of the words in an exercise. There should only be a few words he’s unsure of the spelling. Since your child would be new to spelling through dictation, I recommend that you begin with exercises that will be easy for him so that he has time to adjust to dictation and so he gains confidence in it.

    Thank you Karen!

I always feel like my children would miss something if I don’t start from the very beginning of something. Now I can be at ease!
