How do y’all use Spelling Wisdom?  My daughter will be in third grade and I had planned on using that this year.  The book says to quickly cover a misspelled word with a self-stick note if a student wrongly spells a word while taking dictation of the passage.  Do y’all use a self-stick note while doing this??

I plan on using one of those white out rollers!

We use white out roller and do it after the dictation. My kids HATED being interrupted for me to cover. IMO it’s fine to it after to avoid distracting the child.

We started on Spelling Wisdom 1 in grade 4.  We did only one passage per week.  Day 1 we talked about grammar in it.  Capitalizations, punctuations, vocabulary, meaning of passage, etc.  He picked out several words to work on spelling correctly.  He used a notebook to copy the whole passage word for word (transcription) on the left side of a 2-page spread, with correct capitalization and punctuation.  Halfway down the page I wrote the spelling words he picked to work on more and he wrote those three times each.  Day 2 he pulled it out to study it over.  Day 3 he studied it again and then gave me the Spelling Wisdom book to dictate from.  He folded his notebook back and wrote on the right side of the 2-page spread.  He did well with this and he really liked the passages.  We got through about 25 of these this past year.  Next year for 5th grade, he will not have the day 2 review in between and we will do 2 passages per week.  We used the sticky notes some, and sometimes I had him erase and correct because I could not find my sticky notes.  And that worked okay the few times I did it.  Here is a video of Sonya showing how to use Spelling Wisdom.  Scroll down some.

Wings2fly, thank you for sharing. I think I was expecting too much too soon with my fourth grader. Next week, I plan to follow your “plan”. Looking ahead in Book 1, the passages get long. Do yall dictate the entire passage or just a few lines?

    Thanks!

Glad you found it helpful Jennifer.  I came up with this method from reading on the forum how others had used it, and put it all together and it worked well for us.  I have read posts about longer passages where users say the child is prepared for the full passage, but they write from dictation only part of it.

    One more dictation/Spelling Wisdom question:

I like our Spelling Wisdom book, but was wondering if doing copywork/dictation directly from the books we are reading for school would allow for more connections.  What do you think, ladies?  I’m contemplating changes to make our Atmosphere less “busy.”

    Thanks!
