Just wondering what some of y’alls thoughts are on spelling.  My DD8 has been using AAS.  She’ll finish level 3 next week.  We started spelling ’cause her older sister was doing it and she wanted to, also.  This year spelling has been a struggle.  She gets upset about doing it.  She doesn’t want to do the tiles.  She gets grouchy.  I asked the other day why she suddenly gets a bad attitude at spelling time and she says ’cause she already knows how to spell the words and doesn’t want to do it.  She’s right.  She does spell them all correctly.  I’ve continued mostly so she could learn the rules behind them to help her with harder words in the future.  But, does it matter?  I didn’t learn most of those rules and spell just fine.  She seems to be a natural.

So, my quandry is what to do now.  I don’t want to continue with a bad attitude.  Do I continue AAS?  Do I switch programs?  I was looking at Spelling Power.  Any thoughts on that program?  I’m not sure Spelling Power would be a good fit for my other DD who is dyslexic and struggles with all things “lettered.”  I am not thrilled about the idea of 2 different spelling programs – then again one of the benefits of homeschooling is teaching the child.  Should I just skip spelling next year?  She’ll be turning 9 half way through the year.

Thanks for your thoughts and advice.  I really feel at a loss when planning for next year about most all of our subjects.

    Well, my 2 cents…

Continue AAS for your DD who is dyslexic.

For your 8yo natural speller who is about to turn 9 – I’d go with studied Dictation.  Either Spelling Wisdom, or something else you decide on.   It will be easier on you, as your natural speller will (with a bit of training maybe) be able to study the passage on their own.  Then a couple of times a week you dictate it.  Easy.   (and less of your time than the roughly 15 minutes a day of AAS)

That is what I’d do…. if I actually had any natural spellers….  (maybe my younger ones will be?)

I am considering the new Spelling You See for ds9! http://www.spellingyousee.com  and continuing w/ Spelling Wisdom for my 11 yr old.

I agree that continuing with AAS for your dd who is dyslexic makes sense.

I also agree that Spelling Wisdom is a great fit for natural spellers. It has just enough challenge and being in context works well for them. My ds8, who is a natural speller, is doing a great job with book one and the studied dictations.

I will add too that Spelling Wisdom is the first spelling that really worked and helped my ds10 who is a natural reader that has had a harder time learning to spell. AAS helped his spelling, but in context dictation at age 9 made the spelling light bulbs come on.

    Hope this helps.

My daughter is not yet a natural reader…still struggles with fluency…and we haven’t done any spelling yet, so I’m not sure if she’s a natural or not, so how would someone like me be able to tell what spelling program would be a good fit?
