My 7 yo son has sensory motor integration disorder, suspected ADD, dyslexia, and hypotonia. He has been attending speech therapy since he was 2 and a half. Within the past two months, his reading went from non-existant to a wildfire. He’s starting to enjoy reading…a lot! Which is great. Despite this, he still spells phonetically. It has been so bad that I showed his science notebook page (basically his comic strip of the experiment we did with water displacement), which he wrote out all by himself, all phonetic, to his speech therapist for ideas on how to help him with getting his thoughts out onto paper.
His speech therapist suggested I start spelling words with him ASAP. Do any of you have suggestions on what I should use for a spelling curriculum for a 7 yo?
We use A Reason for Spelling and it works wonderfully. My daughter is an advanced reader but a horrible speller LOL….I cannot understand how that works in her little brain since she reads things off the page without hesitation but cannot for the life of her spell. I looked into this spelling program and we love it. SHE loves it, which is the most important, and is doing fantastic. It provides a list of 10 words for the week. Day 1 you have a pre-test of those words and day 5 the spelling post-test. The kids have several creative ways every day of the week to use/learn the words using several creative methods. One aspect that I find really useful is that the children self-correct their spelling pre-and post-tests. For whatever reason this gets her all excited and she is more apt to pay attention to what she is really spelling b/c she will be correcting it/marking it wrong herself. So, it works 🙂
We’ve found All About Spelling great and the company guarantees it for all children, even those with learning difficulties. There is a 1 year money back on it which might be attractive .
