We use All About Spelling and am wondering how often you feel spelling should be done?

We ‘do’ spelling 4 times a week, for 10 or so minutes a day.  This means that each lesson takes 2 to 5 days.  On Fridays (or our short day) we do homophones instead.

    But that’s just us.

This past year spelling didn’t really “happen”. Oops. I am working on schedules and it will be going back on there. We use Spelling Power, which is supposed to be 15 minutes a day. She recommends a late start (at least age 8) to spelilng and copywork prior to that.

I have 2 who will be getting formal spelling lessons, so I’m thinking realistically (b/c it is teacher intensive with this book) to have spelling with 12YO DS on M/W and then a review/test of missed words on Friday. Then have spelling lessons on T/Th with 9YO DS and then review/test missed words on Friday with him as well.

I won’t start formal lessons with 7YO DS and 6YO DD until maybe 3rd grade or even 4th. I do have them doing copywork and we gently go over their free writing and make verbal corrections as needed, but I don’t want to squelch their creativity so I find a balance.

Then 13YO DS has graduated from spelling instruction. He does very well with it and will mostly use a dictionary when needed. If I find he is misspelling a lot, I will review as needed.

We just finished All About Spelling level 1 this past year.  We did spelling 3-4 days a week.  On the lessons that were shorter and the kids caught on to faster we were able to complete a lesson in 3 days, but most weeks we needed that extra day to get the concept down.  And, most lessons were just about 10-15 minutes.  The last day was more like a spelling test.  I read them the list of words on the word cards that they’d practiced through the week and then added a couple extra of the words listed in the book for practicing the concept.

We use AAS 3-4 days a week. Dd11 does 1 lesson per day as its easier for her and ds8 does 1-2 lessons per week. We spend 15-20 minutes per lesson.

We do AAS daily for about 10 minutes, usually working with the tiles for a couple of sessions (depends on how quickly she catches on), then one session for dictating the word list and 1-2 sessions dictating the phrases/sentences. Depending on the concept in question we take 1 to 1.5 weeks per lesson. (We just finished level 1 and it took us about 6 months.)

This is with my dd6.5 however, who is just learning the basic concepts for the first time.
