My 2nd daughter, 3rd grade, is working her way through the Barton Reading and Spelling program – and it’s working fabulously!
Now I’m thinking about my other daughters. For next year, they will be in 6th grade, 2nd grade, and 1st grade. What spelling curriculum can I use that will introduce the rules of spelling ?
For example, I recently learned from Barton (I have no memory of learning spelling rules, but I’m a very good speller) that if a word ends in [k], you spell it ‘ck’ if the [k] is immediately preceded by a vowel. You spell it ‘k’ if the [k] is preceded by another consonant. That’s why “kick” is not spelled “kik”. Who knew???
So, I’m LOVING all these spelling rules. What curriculum out there will do that?
The ck, two letter /k/ is used only after a short vowel that says /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, or /u/.
jack, peck, lick, knock, duck
All About Spelling, Writing Road to Reading, Spalding, or Spell to Write and Read, Logic of English all use OG phonograms and this methodology. AAS is the easiest to implement, but moves the slowest. The others are a bigger time investment.
