Would it be beneficial to add rhyming words to the Spelling Wisdom as the Delightful reading does. My ds is quite new to spelling even though in grade 4. So if for example he learned Practise what you preach. Would it be considered lists if we looked at the spelling of reach, each, teach etc. or should I just continue with the next exercises and these will come by and by. He is still learning reading better also. He is having trouble keeping the words in his long term memory also. I don’t think he is getting them in his minds eye. What do I do there? Just keep asking him to spell those again as we move along. He is doing well in the moment of the dictation but when we move to the next exercise it is being lost.
I am also very interested to hear advice in this area. My ds10 is also just starting Spelling Wisdom and is a reluctant speller. I have wondered if I should just put Spelling Wisdom on the shelf for another year and focus on some basic spelling, or incorporate more spelling into each passage as Kim suggests.
Looking forward to hearing from experienced Spelling Wisdom users.
I think that word families can help build confidence and fluency. =) If you feel that it would help him, try it. But don’t force him to spell them all, you can just show him how cool it is that he can also spell — now that he can spell — . Make it an “adventure-challenge” and allow him to some up with the rhyming words whith you – and you can write them correctly as he does so he can see them.
On dictation: Could you find other quotes or passages that contain those same words for a few days/weeks until he has it? Spelling Wisdom is set up that way by having the words/passages cross-referenced in the back – (at least I think that was what Sonya said). By reinforcing it that way, in a new passage, it wouldn’t seem so pointed and annoying as a list that we just do over and over.
