My 7 year old has beautiful penmanship, and really works very hard on her copywork. I am wondering what age I should start looking for her to pick up speed while writing? I don’t want to rush her, but I do know eventually she will need to be able to write more quickly.
My son did not pick up the pace until age 11, with an ink pen, in cursive. He used to be very slow because he would press hard with a pencil. A black gel ink solved that problem. And he wanted it to be perfect and did lots of erasing and correcting, something else the ink pen helped with. He had to let go of some perfectionism with no eraser. And if it is a spelling error he catches, I have him struck through it once. But for years, it was slow going. 🙂
Thank you! I think the perfectionist tendencies are part of our problem as well. I may just try letting her write in pen sometimes to see if it helps. ?
If the lessons are too long, you could just shorten the passage to be copied. I would not rush her at age 7. It was more of a concern for me when he was 10 and was expected to write more. It took me a while to figure out the solution for him with a bold dark gel ink and no eraser. He likes the high contrast of bold black on white. He still uses pencil for math and in his free time.
