Special needs high school questions?

I am looking for ideas for fall curriculum for my special needs high schooler. Specifically history and science.

Has anyone used Wonders of Creation books for science spines? Or should I use AIG and use Wonders for Creation as extra reading? Given my daughter’s challenges, I do a lot of the reading. It would be nice to have some books for her to do a little reading. Although she doesn’t do much reading because of her dyslexia, she loves to write. I need to give her more responsibility. I like reading, but I think after a while it gets old and I lose her.

Sonya, would you mind sharing how you have covered history and science in your autistic daughter’s high school years?

Anyone else with special needs high schoolers, please share as well.

We’re operating on an elementary level still. Though my daughter is almost 21, she’s doing 1st grade math, 2nd grade handwriting, and reading the 3rd grade reader. So I’m not sure if my answer will help, since we’re not on a high school level . . . yet.

For history, we’ve been working our way through American history. I’m currently reading aloud The Wright Brothers: Pioneers of American Aviation.

For science, she’s reading to me from the Childcraft Volume 5: About Animals.

Thank you, Sonya. I was not sure on what level your daughter was working. My daughter is definitely not high school level. Although she is somewhat higher, your answer was helpful.

My daughter is all over the board skill-wise, so it makes it difficult knowing what to use. I start looking at curriculum and then I remember, she should be working more on life skills. So, I don’t want to bog her down with bookwork that could potentially cause frustration. She will be 16 in May and 10th grade in the fall. I know my main focus should be math and language, which would still be on an elementary level for the most part. So, maybe I shouldn’t even use a formal curriculum for science and history. Just library books. With oral and written narration, since she likes to write. Would that be enough? I guess because she’s working for credits, I feel like I should be giving her more.

We have used Wonders of Creation books in junior high and are working our way through them still in 9th and 10th grades.  We are pleased.  However, if you are wanting to cut down on reading aloud, what about some audio and video resources?

Science: Awesome Science with Noah Justice dvds about National Parks

101 series DVD sets (Physics, Biology, or Chemistry)

Apologia texts have audio books for all levels elementary through high school

Backyard Birds and Monarch Butterflies dvds

History: Drive Thru History DVD or free streaming on Roku or TBN website

    Mystery of History CD set

Diana Waring History Revealed CD set.  Although this is unit studies based, each history unit has related hands-on and writing projects as options.

    Literature history selections on audiobook

Wings2fly, thanks for the suggestions. I will look into some of these resources. My daughter does better with video than audio, but if she had a book to follow along, that may be a good thing to do now and then. I will have to check our public libraries and Christian library for similar resources.

I just want to make sure I don’t go buying something that will end up not working, like so many things I’ve purchased over the years:( I am seeing some progress with my daughter, so I want to keep building in those stronger areas, but I need to make sure I’m at the appropriate level.
