What do you do at home that’s educational, fun (obviously) but that’s a break from the normal routine?  I’m not talking about field trips, more like, something fun to do at home like….spend the whole day doing science experiments…  What else would you do?

Every once in a great while we break down and play board games all day long!! We have also been known to snuggle up in our polar fleece blankets on a cold winter day with a roaring fire burning in the woodstove and read all afternoon aloud!! We have taken a whole day to just be out in nature. And then of course there are the days when we spend the whole day doing our crafts, just because we feel like it. 🙂 Every once in a while you just gotta “break the rules” and endulge!!!

I gave one morning to my daughter to be the “teacher” and she was allowed to “teach” whatever she wanted… we played bored games and cards and watched a educational movie. My son got to be the “teacher” for the afternoon and he chose lots of PE stuff including dodgeball, baseball, and kickball. He also required us to read aloud a bit too. they enjoyed playing the role.

My husband sometimes works from home and needs quiet.  On those days we have a “movie day”.  This year we’ve been watching Drive Through History and Moody science videos.  After that, we often finish with something a little more fun.  We also do this when we are sick, but not too sick to cancel school altogether.

Great ideas!  I love the cold winter day/woodstove scene….  that will definitely be us this year as we are having a baby in early December!  I will certainly need to stock up on yummy books from the library this winter.

I also love the idea of the kids being the teacher for a day.  My daughter would greatly enjoy that.

And thanks for the references to the videos.  I was just looking for some videos to add to our collection in preparation for this winter.

You can watch Drive Thru History free online at iTBN.org or on Roku TBN.

If you have streaming Netflix or Amazon Prime, there are many documentaries and educational kids shows. Also PBS travel shows, cooking, painting, etc.

We have had a fun game day too.
