I’m doing a bit of “Big Picture” planning, trying to determine my priorities for things I want my children to learn in the long run.  The academic subjects are fairly obvious, but right now I’m trying to create a list of the “Life Skills” areas that I will need to address eventually.  What would you add to this preliminary list?

House and Home:  cleaning, organizing, home maintenance (basic carpentry, plumbing, decorating, etc.)

    Nutrition, cooking, and meal planning

Financial management: staying out of debt, budgeting, making wise purchase decisions,

Basic vehicle and other equipment maintenance

Personal Safety: internet, choosing good friends, etc.

Clothing: choosing quality items, laundry skills, simple sewing/clothing repair

    Thanks,

We made a similar list for our kids earlier this year. There is some overlap, but this is the list we have:

    – Chores and Basic Housekeeping

    – Hygeine and Personal Care

    – Cooking

    – Basic Home/Car Maintenance

    – Typing

    – Computer Literacy (knowing how to use various programs, internet safety, etc)

    – Fitness and Nutrition

    – Basic First Aid

    – Stress Management and Emotional Health

    – Finance Management

    – Hobbies and Handicrafts

Most of these things we won’t cover formally during school time necessarily, but I did make a simple chart for my planning folder with each category listed down the side so I can keep track of things we have done informally in each of these areas, and to remind myself of things that I may have forgotten. At the end of each year I’ll have a list of all the ‘life skills’ we worked on for their portfolios.

Thanks, that gave me a few things to add – hadn’t thought of First Aid for example.

    Any other ideas anyone?

I would also add caring for young children/babies. In some homes with large families, that skill seems like a given for the older ones. But just something to keep in mind. I had babysat once, maybe twice, when I got married, and I had a pretty steep learning curve when I had my first child. Smile
