Read thru all pages of foreign language posts, and here is what I am looking for: Spanish DVD’s that aren’t too twaddly that we can watch and learn, similar in style to the Signing Time videos, which we will be continuing with for review this year for 1st grade.  I want them to see and learn conversational Spanish, at least a little and be exposed to the sound of it, and I will read a few picture books in spanish as we go along as well (I took it in highschool).  I did find 3 DVDs from the library that we can start with in the fall from the Little Pim Cor. by Julia Pimsleur.  Read about Speekee Spanish, but not only is it in the UK, but looks very dumb, very sesame street. ick. I can’t bear it.

Thank you to anyone who can give some suggestions!

I just thought I would mention that we live in the US and we are using Speekee.  Grandma bought the DVDs for us and we picked up a Region-Free DVD player on Amazon to play the DVDs.

As for it being reminicent of Sesame Street, yes and no.  Speekee is a puppet, and Dino and Lupi are sock puppets.  The rest of the cast are native Spanish speakers.  There is no text on the screen or cartoons.

Even better, the entire program is an immersion program – only spanish is spoken from moment one.  It is a bit “young” feeling for my 10 year old, but she and her next four younger siblings ARE learning spanish from it well enough to speak with their uncle, a native speaker who lives in another state.  The 10 episodes expose the child to a tremendous amount of vocabulary in real settings in spain (at the beach, the bus station, a party, a restaurant, the park, and so on).

Still, like anything, not everyone will enjoy it.  I just wanted to offer a new look at Speekee because we have actual experience with the program.
