The Famous Men book has not been working for us. Not only are my kids not enjoying it, but I’m having a hard time keeping everyone straight myself! Everything else is working well, so I’m hoping to just sub SOTW vol 2 for the Famous Men books. Has anyone else done this? I’d like to hear how it worked out if you did. Also, did you add anything from the activity guide. I don’t want to add in too much, but I think they’d love the coloring pages and some of the activities looked really fun. Lastly, how was their retention? I don’t expect them to remember every detail, but we’ve been having a hard time just remembering what country everyone is from!
I know what you mean about getting everyone mixed up! We are enjoying the Famous Men book, though. I think we like the relatively short readings and the way the men’s stories are told.
The last time through this time period, we used SOTW. My girls’ ages were 7, 5, 3, and 1, so we did use the coloring pages. I read the SotW spine aloud, and while I read, they colored. We didn’t do much of the extra activities.
The reason I switched from SotW to the SCM module 4 for this time thru history was that I was completely confused and couldn’t remember who did what! So, my guess is that this is just a busy time period, and we’d have trouble keeping these historical figures straight no matter what curriculum we’d use.
I keep telling myself that if I was more dedicated about our time line we wouldn’t be quite so mixed up……and I think that’s true. However, life does happen, and inour case, I’ve left the timeline/ Book of Centuries/ Record of Time slip.
One thing I am doing is showing a map every time we read and showing where the current guy is warring (!) and, if we can remember, where the last guy was living or attacking. That helps some, but not enough!
And then the “devil’s advocate” part of me says it’s not the end of the world if my children forget these people, right? Really, I had no clue who most of them were, and I turned out just fine, with a BS and an MM, and am quite happy to learn about these men now. My husband also has no clue who these men are, and he’s successfully managing our farm, the cows are happy and giving good milk, the chickens are laying egges, and the pigs are putting on weight. We’re blessed.
So, we’re enjoying the SCM module much more than the SotW curriculum. We may not be remembering tons more, but I think that as these men come up in real life (when current events hearken back or we read the “this day in history” article in the newspaper, we’ll recognize the names and at that point, we’ll make another connection which will help them remember a little more.
That probably wasn’t very helpful (I’m sorry!), but at least you know you’re not the only one…….and that this one isn’t stressing over it.
Karen, I’m laughing about a bunch of cows not caring who Charles Martel or Alfred the Great are! Yes, we do tend to worry about things that aren’t a big deal in the big picture.
We had our first SOTW reading today (with the coloring page) and my DC really enjoyed it. I think what bothered me most about Famous Men is that my DC really weren’t enjoying the readings…I want them to be at least somewhat enthused about school. I probably will add it in next time (I should have 2 high schoolers at that point, so maybe they can do it independently).
I’m still trying to figure out how to line up SOTW with Module 4…I’m hoping it will be easier to figure out when my book gets here today (I read from the Kindle free sample today and purchased the PDF activity guide from Peace Hill Press, but I still don’t have a copy of the actual book). I think some of the activities could easily fit into our handicraft time, but I don’t want to overdo it! My oldest DD said she likes coloring while listening, so we’ll probably add in the maps and coloring pages. I found the maps very helpful for them to follow along on their own copy.
We also need to be more consistent with our book of centuries! We just started it this year (we did a timeline for ancients) and I have a hard time remembering to add people right away.
One thing I did absolutely LOVE about SotW was the maps!! I LOVED having my girls be able to color in where these generals/kings were moving their armies. I do miss that. (I don’t think the girls do, though!)
We are loving the maps! We used MOH for ancients, and my DC had to write the names of several places on each map. I ended up dropping the mapping portion because my DS really struggled with it last year. They were super thrilled to just circle or color parts of the map today.
