Analytical Grammar has a sale through today on their site, and I needed to know if we’re supposed to use BBR with AG, or after we’ve completed AG. I know you said after on your LA recommendations, but AG says alongside. I have an uprising 7th grader. I just didn’t know if that’s something we can truly use after, or if I needed to add it in with her written narrations each week
I’ve sent your question to Sonya to make sure she sees it. She may not be able to answer in time for you to take advantage of the sale as she is at a homeschool convention this weekend.
I would recommend doing BBR3 later (9th grade or older) and only if you think your students needs the skill of writing a research paper and/or five-paragraph essay. My thinking is that I want the student to get a firm footing in finding his/her own voice and communicating his/her own ideas with confidence before putting formatting and subject and space constraints on him. If you teach the research paper format/5-paragraph essay format in 9th grade, he still has 4 years of practicing with those formats before moving on to college where he will need them, and I think 4 years of practice is very adequate. Introducing the formatting constraints sooner might squelch his attempts to find his own voice in composition.
That’s my $0.02 worth. As always, feel free to do what works best with your student. 🙂
Thanks Karen for doing that! And, thank you Sonya! That was what my thoughts were telling me, to wait, to continue to fine tune her own narrations. We’ve been working on the types of styles that you recommend in 6th grade, so for now I was hoping that would be sufficient! Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! I was going to wait and just ask you at the NCHE, but the sale ends tonight! Can’t wait to see you soon! As always, I’m so thankful for SCM, and all of your obedience to the calling of being such a blessing to other families!
