fyi, the author of Sonlight believes in an old earth and uses some Usborne books with evolution and millions of years. It is more tradional school; a little textbookish. We didn’t do it for long before changing, but grade k might be okay.
I am wondering if Considering God’s creation would work for more than a year, my oldest will be in 6th grade next year and it looks like you would need more than that to cover everything.
I don’t understand how Sonlight can use Evolutionism being that it is suppose to be a Christian base curriculum!?!
Ok, decided to post even though I’ll probably lose what little “street cred” I have, lol. My family (7 yo & 10 yo) ended up using Sonlight science B beginning in January. “B” covers Animals & the Human Body with experiments dealing with magnets and water. So far my kiddos and I both really, really like it. The reading is pretty light – a two page spread per day. After the day’s reading they answer about 3 questions from the workbook. The questions, in my opinion are a decent review (though pretty easy really) but I also don’t stress about them. We’ve been doing them together – takes like 5 minutes. In addition to regular questions, they have some cool cut & paste stuff with the animals that we like. The kids have especially liked the experiments, and I’ve been impressed with what they are learning.
Yes, they use Usborne books. These are NOT living books. My kids really like them though and its working for us. Yes, they have workbook-type activities, but I actually really like them and don’t feel its just busy-work. For my family, the kids wanted something more than just narration or another living book. This breaks things up for us in that regard. I would not call this program a CM program. Also, in this particular “B” we have not encountered anything re:evolution. Nothing at all.
I would also say that while we plan on continuing with Sonlight science, I would heartily recommend the God’s Design for series. The books are really well written, they can easily be used with multiple ages, they have nice pictures, etc. Again, the one we picked didn’t have much in the way of activities, but it sounds like some of the others in the series do. I also really liked the RealScience4Kids, but it was a bit too “light” for us. Though its interesting to note that in SL science “D” they use the RS4K Biology book, which makes it even more appealing to me.
I hope some of this info is useful to you in making your decisions! 🙂 Good luck!
