After seeing the post in here about fly lady I decided to check it out. Wow this is a huge resource for training habits! Not only am I de-cluttering our lives but so are the kids! Last night I went to tuck the kids in and there room was a MESS. They were asleep so I decided to talk to them in the morning. This morning I walked them to their room and they were saying why mom? We get in there… it is SPOTLESS! Even the clothes are folded! I told them great job and let them go. Then I walk to the kitchen and see they had already made there breakfast and cleaned up after themselves! The 2 girls even fed there little brother! And took care of the dishes! Then I walk to the washer and all their laundry for the day is waiting for me to wash! They carried it from there bedrooms! These are habits we have been working on since Jan 1st. Its just like CM says; do it for 6 weeks and it becomes a habit.
So once again; thank you for that post on flylady. Her simple steps have changed our lives!
We’ve been using Flylady for about 7 years and it definitely helps (if you do it) with my hoarder. My son is 8 and l-o-v-e-s everything, everything has meaning (very sentimental). I use the timer (I have a Flylady one) and set it for 15 minutes (just 15 minutes, is all I ask) or I do a 27 Fling Boogie. He seems to understand that when the timer goes off or he reaches 27 items he is done. That gives him a starting point and an ending point. I am a compulsive cleaner, so the ‘rules’ give me somthing to go by as well. I know ‘when’ to stop and move on to something else:)
I do let him know that I/we (as a family) will join him in the 27 Fling Boogie (I always show him the stuff I am giving away/throwing away, etc.) so he doesn’t feel like this is just about him and his stuff.
Wow! I used Fly Lady before children and sometimes got a little overwhelmed with “always being on top of it”. I like it though and have thought about doing it again (after morning sickness goes away – no reason to set myself up for failure from the get-go). I’m curious how you’re using for training habits in your children too.
Even your 2 year old is getting it? Do you use discipline when they don’t get it or just keep pressing on until they do?
I use her principles of 15 minutes is all you need. If you don’t get done thats fine, just 15 minutes. We also do the 27 fling boogie as well and a load of laundry a day keep the chaos away. They don’t mind doing the laundry when it is so small (and neither do I!) I really think they are also learning it more by example; they know mommy has changed and they are changing with me. I’m also using the laying down the rules book and apply it to the 15 minute flylady rules (like make things look nice, not just picked up). It is really easy to apply the rail book to fly lady; the two go hand in hand
I have been a fly-baby for a while… just recently trying to get back in the habit of shining my sink (I haven’t done all the baby-steps ever yet…) – and I do use the 15min timer…
I have a 7yo, a 5yo, a 2yo and a 6mo
I would think they would tend to just sit and do nothing for the 15min though….. although I haven’t tried it…..
Oh if you like fly lady and have an “i” device (pod, pad, phone) then the Home Routine app is THE app to have. It’s exactly in line with Fly lady! (I suspect the creator of it is a fly-baby).
Well, did a 10 min time with my kids tongith… not sure how my son did, as I didn’t check his room after – but the girls did fine in the room with me directing a bit.
