My daughter and I are just finishing up The Man Who Laid the Egg Vernon, and I am sort of having trouble figuring out what the poiont of the book really is. It seems like it is that two Christians can have pieces of God’s total truth but none of us have all of it. All throught the book the main character is questioning Erasmus’s faith or quality thereof. It also seems like he is thinking why can’t everyone just get along.

I could really use some insight from others who have read this book.

My take on the book was that Erasmus and Luther were both disappointed with the way things were going in the church, but they had different responses. It seems like Erasmus wanted to try to change things from within without causing too much upheaval, while Luther was for breaking away and making a change as a separate group.

As a Lutheran and someone who studied Luther extensively in college, I highly disagree about Luther’s response to the Catholic church. Luther wanted to change the church from within (reform it, fix it). He wanted to convince the leaders of the errors of the Church through Scripture, and he never failed to quote Scripture time and time again. He never wanted to break away from the Catholic church at all – they forced him out. He wanted to remain Catholic. He also disapproved of people naming the “new church” after him. We don’t follow a man, we follow God (he quoted Paul when he said the same thing about following Paul vs Apollos vs Cephas (1 Cor. 1:12-13).

I can’t speak about Erasmus or the book in question, but hopefully that helps clear up confusion on Luther’s role in the Reformation.

Thanks Sara for this insightful response. I always wondered about how he felt about the naming of the church. I sort of figured he wouldn’t support that based on the little I’ve studied Luther. I also found the book hard to grasp, but we did enjoy it. I need to go back and reread in light of what you shared.
