  • Hi all,

I wanted to share a series of books that is in the UK which are living history books set in various time periods.  My son has read and enjoyed 2 of the world war 2 books and we’re currently reading the Princess of Egypt book.  The series is called My Story and are written in a diary format.  I think all the series is here .

I was looking for some information on some books I loved as a child growing up in Scotland, I’ve only just realised that they would be described as living history books!  I struggled to find much info on them, but I did stumble across a website with some historical fiction lists that I haven’t seen before and it included some of the books I enjoyed as a child.   Historical Fiction for Children.

    Hopefully this might help some.

Looks like some of the My Story titles may be the same as the Dear America series http://www.scholastic.com/dearamerica/ (the ones set in the US, anyway. Clotee sounds familiar).

Yes, this looks like an English division of Scholastic.  So it would stand to reason that a few titles were the same.  Most do seem to be different, but there are definitely several titles from the Dear America series.  Since this is the case, I would recommend prereading them, as I definitely think the Dear Americas need to be preread.  There are some distinctly adult themes in several, including the Clotee book.  Various of the Dear America series include things like slave rape, suicide, adultery and having one’s hair pulled out by machinery in a mill.  Just a heads-up.  There are much better-written books covering various time-periods.

Thanks for the heads-up about the Dear America series!  I’ve often thought about getting them as I see them, but I wanted to wait till I heard something about them.  Glad I did!

Thanks for the info on them Bookworm.  I haven’t read them at all, I thought I’d said that in my original post, but it seems I didn’t!  I think I might read ahead in our Egyptian one to see how it goes and what it’s like, we’ve only just started it, so it won’t be too bad if we change to another book.

It’s also good to know the american name of them as the reviews can be much more substantial on amazon.com, so I’ll go and look there too 🙂

Wow, thanks for letting us know, bookworm. They don’t call you that for nothing, do they? I have two of the Dear America I picked up at a used book sale because it looked good. But I am glad to know what to watch out for.
