Sorry if this has been posted before, new to SCM. I’m trying to figure out if you actually choose which books you want from a list in the history module, or if they are all recommended, they seem to repeat sometimes. For example, History Module 4 has two books in the 1st-3rd grade section(Leif the Lucky and Viking Adventure) about Leif Ericson. Do I choose one of these or use both? I’ve seen this on other modules too, thanks!
Leif the Lucky is probably the D’Aulaire book and Viking Adventure is a Clyde Bulla, historical fiction. So actually both of these would be used; D’aulaire to read aloud and have narration and Viking Adventure (usually) is read independantly.
Thanks for the info, I’m still a little confused. How would I know from looking at the curriculum guide which ones are read aloud vs independently? I think I understand the family section is for reading aloud and thought books in the grade levels were for independent reading, is that correct? Thanks so much for the help, Adrienne
You’re probably correct that on her SCM GUide regarding ‘family’ and the ‘plus’ section; however, you can read aloud as many as you like and have them read independently as many as you want. So whether to read aloud or independently is ultimately your decision.
I also looked at the Mod. 4 and their aren’t any that do too much overlapping. The family section has “spines” as overview books. I personally don’t see any in the ‘plus’ section that I would leave out. If your child isn’t ready to read LEif the Lucky by him/herself, then you can read it aloud.
