Social Studies?

I was just wondering, is Social Studies the same as geography? All I remember from school is my 7th grade Social Studies class and doing a lot of Map work. If not, what exactly does it entail and how would I use it in the SCM program?

Social Studies is a general term for a bunch of subjects…
Geography, History, Other Cultures, Current Life, just to name a few…
Not to mention economics, civic studies, government, . . .
When they decided that geography and history were no longer important, they made up “social studies” instead. It’s dumbed-down history, geography, current events, economics, civics, government . . .
So would you go so far as to say that if we did scm history and geography and a civics class that we would have it cover? Also, another note, in the state of Washington within the homeschool laws it states “loosely constued” concerning all topics. We are still pretty liberal. I just want ot make sure we have our bases covered…

That’s pretty much what we did: history and geography, with American Government one year during high school.
Another easy thing to add is a Current Events magazine for kids. We like the ones from God’s World News. They have several that are age-appropriate. They aren’t written in a “living” style (I haven’t found a newspaper or magazine that is), but they keep us up to date on current events and look good on the school report.
I just have my older kids read them independently. You don’t have to do any of the supplemental teacher stuff that’s written for classroom use.
