So what subjects are every day subjects in your home?

So the SCM Blog Post got me thinking about how our days are normally scheduled, and the truth is that while we do have a nice variety of subjects and studies, I want to make sure we don’t “miss anything,” so sometimes our days do get tedious.

    http://simplycharlottemason.com/2013/07/17/3-tips-for-a-successful-homeschool-year-tip-1/

I do have several subjects that I schedule for every day, these in particular:

-Scripture memory/religion-History-Math-Science-Reading (that is, the kids have to read some every day.  They usually have several books going at once)

How do you schedule those particular subjects?  I’ve tried to do science just 2x/week, but I find that it’s far too much reading to keep up with if we only do it twice each week.  We’re using the Module 1 for History, so that’s every day, too.  Occasionally I’ll give a day off for math, but they do math year-round so that they are constantly making gains and keeping fresh.

We do have a full-day co-op once a week, and because we lose that day each week, I feel the need to make sure the rest of the week is…well…productive.  I don’t want to risk the it becoming drudgery, though.

    Thoughts??

Daily subjects here are scripture memory, history, phonics, math.  If we are pressed for time, I make sure these are completed and we can finishing them within an hour if we hurry.  Science is attempted to be done daily, but we generally get to it 3-4 times per week…Same with independent reading (for my older two).  Everything else is 1-3 times per week…although we don’t always get to all the extras.

Daily for us are devotional (we do a variety of things here, but this is how we always begin) math, Latin.  We do some form of English but what we do varies.  In upper grades we do science every day.

I only have dd7 doing school work so far.  We do devotion/scripture memory at breakfast for all, then she does reading, writing (copywork), and arithmetic every day.

Perhaps I overload us!  Daily we do devotional, math, history (which might include geography or map drill), science, spelling/reading/grammar instruction based on age, read-aloud, Latin (will be adding Hebrew and Portuguese back in this year).  Then we add in one of the following:  artist study, composer, poetry, logic, Shakespeare, art instruction (how to draw).

This is exactly how we are, too.  I have 4-5 core subjects that are every day, and several subjects that are 1-3 times each week.  Sometimes it just feels like “getting through the list” instead of enjoying the learning we do together.

I have realized that doing our read-alouds goes very well if I pair it with breakfast or lunch.  They are more attentive listeners that way – and there is a lot less squabbling among them.  I just have to discipline myself to do that each day.  What else, though, would make the day flow more smoothly and make for a more joyful and atmosphere while we work through the core items?

I am with jawgee and crazy4boys.  We have a few that are daily, then most are more than once a week but not all 4 days.  Also, they may have history 4 days per say but with 2 different books.
