  • We are looking ahead to a new poet, any favorite suggestions?

So far we have done Stevenson, Frost, and Emily Dickinson in the last few months.

Bumping this post on a new poet,

Just in case you didn’t know it. 🙂

We are still on A.A. Milne poems. Are your kids too old for those?

I’ve never thought of him before. I don’t think anyone’s too young for those witty poems. 🙂

I’ll look into those today. Are you using a poem book specifically about him and his poetry?

We read Lewis Carroll poetry last term before we started Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland this term. My kids 4-10 enjoyed it. I think maybe reversing it might make it more meaningful. Read Alice then his poetry.

I think that simple home is a fan of The Scarlett Pimpernel???  How about Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein as more modern kid poets?

I also very much enjoy Edgar A Guest (American) who wrote poems along the same lines as Robert Louis Stevenson.  LOVE his poem called “Myself” and plan to make my children memorize it.

When We Were Very Young and Now We are Six are two poetry books by A.A. Milne.  My dc are 5 and 7.5 and they still enjoy them.

My kids learned “Eldorado” by Poe last year and enjoyed it.  We just read a book and several poems about/by Christina Rossetti and they like to draw pictures of one of the poems after I read.

We are currently studying Stevenson, but I think we’re going to wrap it up this week and study A.A. Milne.  My children (even my 14 year old) likes the book I picked up at the library with his poems and since we’re CM newbies and poety novices, I figured it would be great for us.
