I am needing ideas for good music that would appeal to my tween age boy. I prefer to not get into Christian hip hop and rap, but it seems so many kids at this age like it. 🙁 I’d like to buy something that we all enjoy, and that has positive lyrics.
Also for my girls who are younger, I thought I’d like to introduce them to a female vocal artist that has some beautiful music ( singing to classical, or hymns). Any suggestions?
For a ffemale artist who sings hymns, my favorite is Sarah Macintosh’s albulm “Then sings my Soul” hands down. You can sample some of the songs here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/macintosh
Well, we’re Broadway music fans here. Others we listen to regularly are Barry Manilow, Barbera Streisand, Micheal Crawford, John Denver and Mandy Patinkin. I also put on Celtic Christian music and Messianic Jewish music. The only contemporary Christian music I like is Casting Crowns, Third Day, Newsboys and Mercy Me and maybe an individual here or there; most of it I don’t care for. The gospel cd’s from Randy Travis and Alan Jackson. Dolly Parton’s bluegrass stuff.
My son (11) listens to Barry Manilow and classical. He prefers stories more than music.
and Sarah Brightman, especially the earlier ones: Phantom of the Opera (my son,age 11, likes this, too); Time to Say Goodbye and Classics. I haven’t gotten the others yet. The Prince of Egypt soundtrack. Celtic Women as well as classical. She also likes Amy Grant’sHymns For the Journey.
We listen to mostly classical, particularly the Suzuki violin pieces (we’re going into Books 2 and 4 so we listen at least through Book 5 on a regular basis) but I grew up on John Denver. Still love his music. Haven’t thought of Barry Manilow in years! LOL!! Used to listen to Barbara Streisand, too. Ah, the nostalgia. Also love the Darlings music on The Andy Griffith Show and other bluegrass. Being from TN, that’s pretty well standard.
We obviously listen to a lot of Suzuki violin as well (have one in Book 2, one 1/2 way through Book 1, and 1 pre-twinkler, and 1 who claps….)
Other than that, we listen to a HUGE range of music. Fiddle, Bluegrass, Rock, 70’s-Heavy Rock, Folk, Canadian Folk, Country.
It gets me – my husband says we need to teach them Folk Songs. My kids sing along to such songs like “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, “Sink the Bismark”, “Donald Where’s your Trousers”, “The Mary Ellen Carter”, “I’yse the Boy”, “Puff the Magic Dragon”, “The Crusader”, and “The Highwayman”. That is a HUGE range of Folk Songs, and our kids often sing to them all and more….
Laura.bora, I really like the Sara Macintosh cd samples. Thanks for suggesting! That’s on my to-buy list now.
You ladies are cracking me up suggesting the Darlings! “Salty Dawg” does have a certain southern charm doesn’t it? 🙂
Rachel, I’ve never thought of Broadway for my kids before. Good suggestion to think about. I used to listen to the Phantom of the Opera all the time. I think my girls would like it, although I am not certain my son would. Also, thanks for reminding me about the Jackie cd too. That will be a great one for my girls.
We have a lot of contemporary Christian as well as hymns we listen too. We also love musicals and the new Phantom of the Opera at the Albert Hall is wonderful. I too love John Denver and most folk music – I also love the old music of The Beatles and some of the groups from that time. My daughter’s prefer the contemporary Christian and also classical Bach especially – though they like some new things as well and some country. Linda
My son is almost 12, and though we enjoy various styles of music, I thought I would mention a few “upbeat” christian bands (sans hip hop/rap) which I think would appeal to both of you: (husband is a worship leader/songwriter so we get lots of exposure!) Gungor, Jesus Culture, Songs of Water (primarily instrumental), Wiliam Matthews (Deep Cries Out is on youtube), Matt Redmond (We love his new album 10,000 Reasons), Audio Adrenaline (Hit Parade album is all-time fave here). David Crowder Band just released a new album (Give Us Rest) which is amazing and almost half the songs are redone hymns (with an edgier, southern twang at times but my son loves this!) Another on the edgier side my son really enjoys is John Mark McMillan. If you/your son likes these suggestions, I’d be glad to offer others!
Danceandbeglad, I could just hug you for all these great suggestions! My son will enjoy these edgier type songs. We love David Crowder, so these similar bands will be fun to have in our collection. Obviously I don’t keep up with the latest music and you have helped me so much. Thank you!!!!!
Thanks Dance I also will look them up. I like christian but my kids are pulled away because dad doesn’t listen to it unless he’s in my van. So we struggle (or I do) so we only let them listen to country when we are there and can at least make sure the lyrics are fine for us, though I still struggle, but this is dh’s thing not mine.
But I will be trying these bands you listen to and see what they think.
Anywho..off to try and request these CD’s from the library. Thanks Misty
Yea! Gungor is one of my faves! *Virtual hugs all around* Simple home, I forgot to offer you a recommendation for the littles: we have been loving the Scripture Lullabies cd’s, half are done with a female vocalist, half male. Can’t say enough good things about these! (scripture-lullabies.com)
Enjoy your new music!
Leah
