I’m planning my first CM year and I can’t decide which books. How many books would you suggest per subject? I’ve seen several sites with plans in place, but I’m leaning towards planning my own year. I just don’t want to go overboard and I don’t want to not have enough either.
Let me also add I’ll have a K and a 4th. Should I focus on one period per year or should I pick a time period PLUS do early Amercian History? And is science better with one primary focus per year or one per term? So many choices….How do I know what’s the best?? I’m starting to panic.
My first year I had a 4th grader and a K, too! Try not to panic. We’ve all been there!! Looking back I think I was too worried about doing everything “right”.
For history, we chose to start with books listed on Module 5, pieced together as I saw fit. We read at our own pace without a specific schedule and I got 90% of the books we used from our local library. At the time I didn’t have Stories of America – if I were to do it again I would defintely incorporate that into our family readings.
For science, I didn’t have a clear plan my first year but since then we’ve settled into using Noeo Science as a family. I buy the level appropriate for my older child and we study together (this works well because my younger son loves science, so he is still very engaged even though a lot of it is above his “level”.)
So that you aren’t so overwhelmed, you could study history for half of the year and then science for the other half. We have done that with two terms this year and it helps take off a little pressure.
Thanks for your help! I think I’ve made a good plan, now lets hope I’m not overwhelmed. We’re going to do medieval times and colonial America. For science, I’m going to divide it up in terms, with Astronomy, land mammals, and weather. I’ve also set up a reading list for literature. I’ve decided on roughly 5-7 books per subject.
