So does anyone use Latin for your main LA?

  • We are going to be getting our First Form Latin from Memoria Press any day now (just coming out) and I was hoping to use this as our main LA program.  There is so much grammar in Latin and don’t want to be redundant. We will continue with written narrations/copywork/dictations and my DGP grammar for diagramming. For what it’s worth we are planning to do all the “forms” for this latin program and I am adding in Tell Me More Spanish as well for my oldest.

Am I nuts for wanting to drop other English lessons? or should I just keep going with R&S or Queen’s or ILL….????

Oh how funny…It must be a Latin morning:)

I personally would just focus on the Latin for your Language Arts.  It really is the best grammar source!  Esp…if you’re planning on keeping narrations, copywork, dictation present in your homeschool.  Many people finally get grammar after learning Latin!

I may be a bit goofy…still fairly new to this homeschooling thing, esp. the CM way…but I didn’t even realize that you don’t need a separate grammar program when doing latin.

My girls, 7th and 3rd are starting Latina Christiana 1, and we did recently drop R&S English…but picked up Andreola’s Simply Grammar…do they really not need to do both?

I was pondering this at great length today. 🙂 I think straight up grammar is taught well with Latin, but there may be some usage things that need to be covered outside of it–like the use of pronouns and their places in sentences–“Do you want to go to the store with Jane and (I/me)?” or the lie and lay dilema…

I’m thinking that oral lessons in usage may be helpful, but how and when to get those in I have no idea. 🙂 I would love to just skip all of that, but the children my kids play with do not always display a great grasp on grammar and my kids repeat everything.

All these choices make my head hurt. Tongue out I would love to have one thing for LA, and since I am doing Latin anyway, maybe I should find a book that covers usage and punctuation and be done with it. But then I could just pick lessons out of R&S and do them orally.

Why, oh why, is there not a Latin program that thoroughly covers it all and at a young age??

    Caroline,

There is a resource that a lot of Catholic homeschoolers use along side or after LC2 called Basic Language Principles Through English Background.  It is written by Ruth Wilson I believe.  I don’t think the resource is necessarily Catholic for those of another denomination.  However, it is popular amongst the Catholic Homeschool crowd.

I guess it is a fabulous resource for making sense of English and Latin grammar.  You may want to check it out.  It is not flashy, but a great text.  Not expensive either.  You can find it on Amazon perhaps and also http://www.adoremusbooks.com or http://www.emmanuelbooks.com

People that use it say that it turns on those light bulbs in ones head.  Just an FYI.

I’m sorry Caroline…my brain is tired.  It is Basic Language Principals through LATIN Background.  You were probably wondering what good the former would do you..Sorry!:)

Thanks Briedell and Rachel!  I’m off to check out the links. Laughing
