I won’t need this for another year, since ds will be in kindergarten next year, but I guess it’s the planner in me. I’m torn between TruthQuest, which looks a little intense in the writing area (unless something changes next year, I have a feeling that’ll be our problem area) and Simply Stated for 1st gr social studies. I know several of you use TQ; do any of you know anything about Simply Stated? The samples on its website and at CBD look like simple booklists. The description on the website looks like it’s pretty simple, which may be what we need for 1st grade, then start TQ in 2nd.

    Hi Karen,

I don’t know much about Simply Stated but I can say with TQ we only discuss the “Think/Write” assignments for that young of age. Also the commentaries in TQ are great for us moms who never learned history from a biblical worldview; I would say that the commentaries are more for mom and upper elementary ages than for kindergarten. Great to know – like rubies nonetheless. 🙂

I had this and sold it. It is *very* simple. Really just a booklist for each state. Also, a great many of the books were simply not available here. That can happen with any list, but I just wasn’t able to dredge up interesting-looking and unique books for every state, and I hadn’t the $$ to buy them. It’s OK, I suppose, but I really don’t think it’s a social studies curriculum. I’d pick some simple history stories and a simple geography related living book or two instead.

We’ve been using TQ this year and it has been great but challenging. Our library is not that good, so we’ve, at times, really relied on the TQ commentary and our spine book. Also, I’ve done searches on the internet for information on different people and time periods we’ve been studying and that has been helpful.
