My soon to be 9th grader needs a grammar resource for one year. I have used different things with my other two children. There are many reasons why I think we need just a simple review type curriculum this year. I am not sure how she would like Our Mother Tongue and I feel like Analytical Grammar might be too much than what we want to commit to doing. Any suggestions for something simple and short for a one year review.
I guess I am wondering just how much grammar a student really needs. I really don’t remember doing grammar in high school. It was all literature and composition. If a child has the basics and a reference guide, is it necessary to continue teaching the grammar mechanics over and over?
Could we just use Beyond the Book Report Season 3 for writing this year?
It depends on your personal philosophy, and how your student is doing. Do you want to cover grammar each year of high school or for one semester during high school? What is your student’s future career path? Does grammar play a large part in that? My dd who graduated in May is an ASL Interpreter. Grammar is a subject we covered every year, as part of that.
My boys who were hands on, did one semester of grammar during high school. Of course I still corrected their spoken and written grammar for English class.
Analytical Grammars offers Review and Reinforcement books, along with their high school reinforcements (which go along with the literature selection you are currently studying). Those might be helpful to you instead of feeling like you have to do the full program.
This grammar program is not like anything I’ve ever seen. The book is covered in like 6-8 weeks time and then for the rest of the year students tackle one sentence a day. So quick it is very easy to add to any schedule. Covers 8 parts of speech, Parts of a sentence, Phrases, and Sentence types including punctuation.
Level 5, 6, 7 are for ages 12-18
You can just use the Magic Lens grammar book and the 4 practice book alone even though the whole program has the vocab, poetry, and writing. They all intermix concepts and just helps to solidify the concepts, but isn’t required to get the grammar concepts.
If your daughter has already had plenty of grammar instruction, there is no need for her to continue to study grammar in high school. Most public and private school students focus on composition and literature in the high school years.
If you really feel like your daughter needs another year of grammar, Easy Grammar Plus teaches the subject from the beginning in a quick, fairly painless manner. It is to the point and only take a few minutes each day.
Easy Grammar also offers a program that is simply review for those who have already covered grammar thoroughly and just want to keep their skills fresh.
