The kids were finding all kinds of bugs yesterday at the park and the prize was a pillbug whose belly was covered with white.  At first we thought they were eggs, but it turned out to be babies.  The kids were excited – tiny little white pillbugs.  The kids carried it back to show dad, and of course by that time there were baby pillbugs crawling all over my daughter’s hands (she’s 9).  Dad was dutifully interested, but a nearby adult male took one look and said, “Eww, that’s so gross!  Yuck!” and walked away.  My kids were hurt.  My daughter said, “He said they were gross.  I thought they were cool.”  I used it as an opportunity to mention how we shouldn’t let others’ reactions dampen our own enthusiasm, but I was frustrated too.  Sometimes adults are annoying…

    Just wanted to share.

It is reactions like the one your child experienced that put children off bugs and nature – it is so sad.  Adults should really think before they react.  Right now my teen daughter has a collection of snails, and caterpillers waiting to turn eventually into swallowtails, and they are anything but gross – really interesting creatures.  I am glad you managed to turn the comment into something positive. Children need to grow up with a love for nature, it is important.
