Should I use Mod. 2 Handbook?

I’m getting ready to start Mod. 2 and everyone has been so helpful with my questions. So, I’m wondering if I should buy the Mod. 2 Handbook? I have been going back and forth because I’ll be using some different books and probably not the geo. just yet. I was going to use the Story of Greece by Macgregor, Famous Men of Greece and the Bible and then add in age-appropriate books. I know the book lists are suggestions so do I just replace books from the guide with the ones I schedule? Also, what if I want to do history more than one time a week, which is what I think it’s scheduled in the guide. I’m sure it’s really helpful to have the guide but I’m having a hard time understanding without having it in front of me. 🙂

    Thanks,

    Kristen

Download the  free sample – it’s like 60 lessons or something crazy that they give away for free, so you can really see what’s in it.  That should help.  I LOVE the handbooks, even when I modify readings – it helps to keep me on track and divides up the Bible portion into manageable readings.  I wouldn’t be without it.

Even though I ended up adding and changing my history portion to The Story of Greece and the Famous Men of Greece, I still use the guide to help me with the Bible and the geography part…like Rebekahy said, it makes the Bible manageable for lessons. So if you want the Bible portion already figured out for you, it is worth the money to get it.

The additional book list is helpful, but you can do that part on your own.  In fact, when I drew up my plans for The Story of Greece, I added in those SCM books.  I even scheduled out a couple of the older ones.  The smaller ones I added to my additional reading list to do when I felt like it with in the time frame it falls. Since I have the ones I have collected in physical books, plus the YC collection, some might be replaced by another selection.  The problem I have is weeding out books – they are all so good.  That was why I listed everything I have in my plans – when we are there in the actual lesson, it will help me choose a book that is based on something my kids are expressing interest in.

I wanted to do history more than one time a week too, so I figured M and W are Bible days, T and TH are History and F is geography – and if I can find a video from the library about the country we will watch it instead of the Holy Land geography book during the time we are on that country. If we finish one before the other, we’ll just add those extra lessons to our days. I decided not to stress too much about the number of lessons since many of the MacGregor ones are short and easily doubled up.  Sometimes I double up on the Bible if they are short enough (I added a few things to that, too).

I purchased the guide for Mod 1, even though I was planning on making changes to it.  It’s really nice to have the Bible pages planned out as well as narration reminders.  There are super wide margins in it, so I write in changes there.  I am planning on making a few changes next year as well, mainly to use books we already have.  The guides are so inexpensive that I think it’s worth it to go ahead and purchase them.  However, I’m sure you could plan it all yourself as well.  I think it mainly depends on how much lesson planning you want to do!

Thanks, ladies. That’s kind of what I figured. I need all the extra help I can get. 🙂

It’s worth it for the Bible schedule, but I don’t follow the rest of it very closely at all.  We have substituted a fair bit of the books.
