My son is 8 years old and he started reading back in May, right at his birthday. Since then, he usually has a book in his hand. He loves to go through book series. First Magic Tree House, then Geronimo Stilton, now Lego Ninjago. I ask him to read from a series called Childhood of Famous Americans for school time, and he usually enjoys those.

Are there other books that I could be encouraging him to read for fun? Are the ones he likes too twaddly and maybe I should steer him away from them?

My son is almost 9 and not a huge reader, so I’ve tried for now to find things he enjoys.  He really likes the A to Z Mystery series by Ron Roy.  There are 26, one for every letter of the alphabet.  Recently I’ve made him get a little harder readings for “school time”, but these he really enjoys.  I find it hard not to find twaddle at this age, especially while encouraging reading…these may be considered that, I don’t know, but he does enjoy mysteries.  HTH.

Books by Dick King-Smith and Clyde Bulla have worked brilliantly for us at this stage.

    Also:

    –  C.W. Anderson’s series of Billy and Blaze, there are about 10 in that series, albeit they are shorter in text, still enjoyable for my boys.

    – Patricia MacLachlan’s Sarah trilogy  – Sarah, Plain and Tall – Skylark – and Caleb’s Story — also good for that age (and no, despite the title of the first one these are not geared for girls…).   There are others by Patricia MacLachlan as well and most of hers are pretty well suited to this “in between” reading level.

    – Betty MacDonald’s Mrs Piggle Wiggle, Mrs’s Piggle Wiggle’s Farm, Happy Birthday Mrs Piggle Wiggle – also great for this stage and quite hilarious!

My boys also loved Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web, etc. by White at this stage.

Homer Price by McCloskey was another of their favourite early reads, though if I recall correctly there were some more challenging words that they had to ask me for help on. (I tried to encourage them to ask, ask, ask so they wouldn’t word-skip… they did word-skip anyway but that is another story altogether…)

I found Magic Treehouse, G. Stilton and the like to be twaddly.  As much as my boys loved these kinds of series they were just SO different from where I wanted us to be; in the end my boys were okay with me getting rid of them.  (we had good reason anyway because we were moving and needed to clean house)  I kept a couple of the MT Fact Trackers only for my 6 and 4 yr olds.

Thank you! Those are some great suggestions and I will look for them at the library.

Since my post two weeks ago, he has enjoyed:

Li Lun: Lad of Courage, by Carolyn Treffinger

How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell

Childhood of Famous Americans: Daniel Boone
