One of my daughters is turning 8 soon. I was thinking of getting her one of those cute little beginner sewing machines that I have seen in catalogs. Does anyone know if they are good quality? I am not expecting to use it forever of course, but just a good introduction to sewing.
Hi – I tried that and it wasn’t overly good, in fact it didn’t work. I would recommend that she learn on a real one and that way she can view it as a grown up, responsible, yet fun thing. My daughter had to learn on mine when her child one didn’t work, and I think it ended up being better. She loved being grown up enough to use Mom’s machine. You will end up supervising her either way. =) There are basic sewing machines at Walmart and other places that are fairly economical for what you are trying to do and could last her a long time if she takes care of it.
I had gotten one of those at a resale shop last year, hoping to use it with my daughter who is 5. I don’t remember the brand, but after trying it out, I ended up giving it to my niece for Christmas. I thought it was very loud! I decided to wait a little and let me daughter use my machine. I think I’d skip the child’s machine altogether, since it did seem pretty cheap quality. I believe it was sold by Pottery Barn.
My mom has mine from when I was a kid in 1970’s. Its an old singer and its Wonderful! My kids are 6 and 5 and have no problem with it. They can chose to hand crank it or use the power peddle. To bad they don’t make things like they use to
I recommend learning on an adult machine, because as Sheraz says they can learn like a grown up and learn to treat it responsibly – I have a German made Pfaff that I inherited from my mother which is dual voltage for European and US use, and mine is reasonably simple and quite old now, but works like a charm. Walmart does have some very reasonable machines, so if you can – try and go for one of those, then it will last for a very long time and be useful to you too. Linda
We don’t have a lot of extra space to leave a full-size sewing machine set up at our house, so I bought my dd a Janome Sew-Mini when she was about 7-1/2. It has worked well for her. It only weighs 5 pounds, so she can easily move it and set it up herself. It is quite simple but seems to be a very good quality machine. I think I got it online for approximately $45 to $50.
Thank you ladies. This will help me tremendously. I am glad to know the catalog one is not what we need. I will look into the suggestions now. Thanks again!
