We are in our eighth year of homeschooling and our oldest graduates next month. We began to homeschool our oldest at grade 5 and, though I really liked the CM method, I got scared and pulled away from it in late middle and high school. I wish I had not, but she finished well despite my mistakes.
My daughter said that she thinks I should have set more goals for her in school. Typically, I would go over the books at the beginning of the year, then check her notebook(s) at the end of each week; do a big check at the end of the quarter. I really did not tell her anything like, “by Nov. I want you to understand xyz”, but just let her go at her own pace to finish what was required within the year.
How do you all go about setting goals for your children?
I haven’t done much of this yet with my kids (oldest is only 7)…
but URtheMom.com has suggestions on doing it, as that is a big part of her getting students to work independantly.
Part of it, from my understanding, is having her year broken down into about 6 or 9 week blocks…. You would sit down with the student and help them figure out their goals on where they would like to be on each subject at the end of that time. Then, I think she has a weekly goal meeting with the younger children (or ones new to this process, or ones struggling with it) to help them figure out what they aim to accomplish that week towards the 9 (or 6) week goal.
This is a real simplification of her system….
