We use Seq. Sp. every day. We do Spelling Wisdom as prepared dictation once a week (or when I remember! )
I like the idea, the theory behind Spelling Wisdom. But it just wasn’t sticking in my oldest girl’s head. She’s a decent speller to begin with, however, she needed something a bit more “organized” than the seemingly random Spelling Wisdom quotes.
My daughter also dislikes writing. So to copy anything, even once, is annoying to her. And really, I don’t think Spelling Wisdom will work well if the student isn’t copying it at least twice. Since my daughter’s handwriting isn’t all that pretty, she still needs a handwriting book. Add that to the writing she needs to do for other subjects, and having her copy the Spelling Wisdom dictation was just over-the-top in her mind.
So, we still use Spelling Wisdom, but it’s only occasionally. I like the idea of it, and my daughter loved it when an author she copied in Spelling Wisdom came up in a history or poetry lesson or in the newspaper or something, but it just didn’t seem to work for us.
I do hope to eventually go back to it – maybe in high school? OR maybe with one of my other daughters.
Thank you, Karen. I am wanting to use SW as prepared dictation, rather than as a spelling curriculum. So I was looking at once or twice a week. I appreciate your input.
We use both. I use SS a few days a week in grades 4-6. I use SW for dictation once or twice a week depending on their age. It seems to be a good balance.
