On another thread, there was a link to an article about self teaching. I was reading it and found Joanne’s website and saw this seminar link. I HAVE NOT listened to it and offer no recommendation except that it’s there for those that are interested.
I’ve heard of her and have a friend who uses her planner. I listened to the first session last night. We already move quickly to self teaching, but I did come away with a few things to work on.
1- spend time with littles and younger learners first (I know this but often tend to olders first.)
2- make them more responsible for the planning. I love making charts and organizing, but I relize I’m micromanaging a bit. We are going to move toward them writing their own assignments in an assignment bk/planner and being responsible for spreading the work over a week. To this end, I’ll have them copy from our twelve week subject lists onto their planners. I’ll likely make my own bc I’m never totally happy with purchased planners.
3- have kids help set short term goals
4-have Monday meetings to get week’s work written in and Friday follow ups to go over
5- check work immediately and move to self checking where possible so long as child is trustworthy
I have to say that today went much better with my ds3 bc I engaged him more than I have been. It’s true that he needs me more than my older kids and I’m going to make sure I do a better job meeting that need.
