I’ve been looking at the SCM Curriculum Guide for this year’s history studies of the Renaissance and Reformation, and I am trying to narrow down which books we will use other than the Famous Men book. Several of the books listed I have not read, so I’m not sure which to choose or if there might be an alternative that’s really terrific.

So, for those of you who have completed this period of history at the high school level (I have DD15 & DD17 for this year), could you please complete this sentence?

“If I had to name one or two books not to be missed for a study of the Renaissance and Reformation, it/they would be……”

In addition to what I posted above, I am looking for opinions on the book, The Shining Company, by Rosemary Sutcliff.  Anyone use that for Middle Ages History?

Amazon says it is for grades 4-7, but the SCM Bookfinder lists it as 7th to 12th.  I have one in 9th and one in 12th, so I’m kind of looking for something they would both read.

Or is there a better living book that covers around 500-600 AD?
