I’ve come around to a new idea that started with suzukimom’s Yearly Panic post and Jennifer’s reply there, basically to start the day doing things together (this year it will be called the Morning Basket, also inspired by posts here) and then while I work with one child let the other listen to audiobooks. I felt like bonking myself beside the head. I can’t imagine why that never occurred to me! I only homeschool two of my children but entertaining the one that I’m not directly working with is something that flummoxes me all the time! The ‘waiting child’ problem really has derailed a lot of our homeschooling and I think Jennifer’s very simply recommendation is going to really help me. I decided tonight I will branch that out to include some very high quality screen time (which I’ve never allowed before). My sons are both 8yo so I think they are old enough for that now.
I’d love suggestions for excellent websites, apps and/or audiobooks that I can look into. I have almost no experience in this realm (even audiobooks) so would love for some suggestions to get me looking in the right direction. Any topic works: math, reading, spelling, physics, anatomy… they are 8yo so anything appropriate for that age!

Xtra math is great. Starfall.com if they need reading practice. My kids also use Usborne books along with the Usborne website that accompanies them. They read 2 pages per day and then go check out the links for those pages. They have especially enjoyed the art books and I have high hopes for the Archaeology book they are just beginning. They have a notebook where they write down something they learned each day at the Usborne site.
For audiobooks, look into Amazon/Audible books with whispersync. You can buy many audiobooks of the classics for less than 3 dollars. You have to buy the kindle book first, then you will have the option to add narration. The narration is actually the audiobook from Audible. You dont need to have a kindle and you dont need to be an Audible member.

I’m going to bump this for more info, hopefully. We just purchased an Android tablet. I really want to get more out of it than Instagram, Facebook, and Kindle. I downloaded a Librovox app and will look into the Audubon apps. How do you get the most use out of your tablet for the whole family? Music? Games? Learning? Apps? My children are ages 7 to 2.

Haven’t used this yet, but khan Academy has various video lessons, math is the most popular. There is an app for it as well and a website where your child can sign in and track specific courses. I am not sure what world view is used for the videos besides math, they might teach something controversial to you, just research beforehand.
EasyPeasy Homeschool has curriculum meant for the child to somewhat self educate with instructions or links for each day’s lessons for each subject. Perhaps you could pick one subject of interest to your boys to do from the EasyPeasy website while you are working with the other.
Duo lingo app for learning a foreign language, only thing is the type written requirement part of the program may be a barrier to using it independently for an 8 yo, but it might be fine.
How stuff works, selected National Geographic Documentaries, and travel shows.
