Second opinion on phonics…

    Hello,

I’m thinking ahead for my son who is almost 5.  We will be officially starting kindergarten in the fall.  Currently, we are using MFW-K as his preschool program and it has been great.  He knows all of his upper and lowercase letters and the sounds they make. We have started blending sounds to make simple, three letter words.  Along with MFW-K, we are enjoying Queens Language Lessons for Little Ones (the 1st book).  His writing skills are very good for his age, too.

My question is this…would continuing the Queen’s LL (progressing to book 2/3 in the fall) along with a few ideas from Ruth Beechick’s “The Three R’s” and simple books like Bob Books and other easy readers be enough to teach him to read?  I’m not sure if the Queen’s LL books are enough to teach phonics thoroughly for him to be reading with some ease by the end of K.

I really like the gentle approach the LL books give and my son enjoys the lessons.  But I also want to be sure we are covering what we need to in kindergarten.  I’m a first year homeschooler so I’m still learning. 🙂

And…if we did do the Queen’s LL in kindergarten, would continuing those in 1st grade make for a full phonics curriculum? Those along with reading practice seems like it would be enough to produce a successful reader.

    Thank you for your help!

Hi Brin,  sounds like your son is doing very well and is in fact already learning what is needed for Kindergarten!  I would suggest keeping with what is already working for you and your son.  Like I said, it sounds like he is doing great!  If you are still worried about missing something, get a list of your state or provinces prescribed learning outcomes or PLOs (this is what they are called in Canada,  don’t know about the states though).  Then when you know exactly what is required for the different grades go from there as to what you need to have to meet that criteria.  But don’t stress!  Chances are, he is already ahead of the game!  doing great!

QLL’s really gets into Phonics in Little Ones 3.  If you are doing each book 2/3 through the year, you should be on Vol. 3 by 1st grade.  That’s our plan.  My dd just turned 6 (technically K).  We are using Language Lessons for Little Ones 2 now.

Queen’s also has her own beginning readers that go along Little Ones 3.  We are currently using Pathway Readers and really enjoying them, but I’m sure hers are great too.
