I’m geting things ready for the new year 🙂 My DS7 will be doing a second grade this year. On the literature suggested for second grade, there are several more “girlish” books. I am not surprised since Sonya has girls!
Does anybody have suggestions for literature more geared toward a boy? I’m not looking to change out all of the suggestions, because he loves all the ones from this past year and the Little House books, etc. I just would like some sugestions of second grade/seven years old books not to miss as read alouds.

My ds7 has become interested in the movies Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern Grows and was excited to learn they were books. I’m reading WTRFG now and will give him the choice of Old Yeller later in the year.
I’m not sure if Old Yeller is OK for a 7yo, but WTRFG should be; my sister read it to her second grade class a few years ago (an ABEKA school) with no problems.

Here are some of our favorites from past years and all ages in our home have enjoyed these from the oldest (who is now 21) down through the youngest who at the time was K age.
The Great Turkey Walk
Ginger Pye (and the rest of the books in that series)
Red Sails to Capri (ds21 just requested that we read this again since he hasn’t heard it since dd14 was in 2nd or 3rd grade)
Cricket In Times Square
The Borrowers (the whole series)
Any of the Ralph Moody books (though you may need to do a bit of editing on the fly here or there… it’s not a lot, from what I remember, though)
The Narnia Books

I did want to mention that we had some problems with the Great Turkey Walk. It was funny and entertaining but I found some objectionable material in it and was glad that I had read it aloud so I could edit as I went. I ended up selling it afterwards.

I have a ds the same age, and we have followed the Curriculum Guide for literature. Believe it or not, I find the books gender-neutral. Ds has really enjoyed the Pollyanna books. You have to go with your gut, as with anything else, but I would caution against assuming a book is only for girls just because its main character is a girl. If you haven’t yet, I recommend Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Trumpet of the Swan, and the Sarah, Plain and Tall series.
I’ll have to take some of these other suggestions too; there are several we haven’t read!
