Do you make them recite verses without looking at the card after they have moved on? I guess besides the daily verse they are currently working on, should all the rest be recited without looking?

I don’t ever let them look – I read it outloud and they say it along with me.

Boy, this is an old post:)  Just wanted to add that I’ve just started using Amanda’s ideas of adding other subjects to our memory system and I think it’s going to work beautifully!  We already had white cards for Scripture and blue for poems.  I’ve now added yellow for history and am planning to add some geography and science.  Nothing major, just those things I hope stick with them…1492, 1776, Gettysburg Address, states/capitols, etc.  It takes so little time to have a fact stated once a month, and frees me from worrying about it while we’re enjoying our books:)  Thanks, Amanda!!!  Gina

Well, I’m trying to figure out where Gina got Amanda’s idea from. I think I understand what you are doing Gina, but how do so many cards work together each day? Do you focus on learning one colored card per week maybe? I am just wondering about the timing.

I was wondering that, too, Sarah. 🙂 Instead of colored index cards/cardstock, you could have a separate box(es) instead. I think this is what I may do because that’s such a great idea! We have been learning parts of our church’s liturgy from the hymnal, so I make copies of whatever we’re learning and put them in a folder for each kid. But I had no idea how to memorize poems and other things easily. Great idea!

I tried to find Amanda’s original post here and on her blog (http://teachthemdiligently-amanda.blogspot.com/p/our-curriculum.html) w/no luck. Sorry!

I’ve just started this, so no expert:)  But what I’m doing is anytime something comes up that I think is important to stick I’m writing it on a colored card and keeping it in the front of my box to slowly add in to our daily tab.  Then, I just keep going as usual.  I do whatever colors are in our daily tab, and so forth.  Our box isn’t huge, since we just started the system this year!  But as it grows, my plan is to get a 2nd box, as Sara suggested.  I want to keep Scripture as is.  But all other topics I may go to once every 2 mo., if needed…whatever seems necessary to keep our memory time manageable.  My goal is probably not more than 15 min./day.  And we only do it M-R.  So many of the additional things I’m planning literally take 5-10 sec. ea., so I don’t envision this being cumbersome!  But as I said, we’re just starting:)  Blessings, Gina

Oh, and some point I’m sure I’ll realize they know these things and just quit asking, or maybe once or twice a year…I don’t think they’ll need to be asked about 1492 and 1776 every month for all their school years:)  So that will relieve some of the volume of cards, I think.  :)Gina

What does everyone use for the box to contain the cards? I am currently using a tea tin, but I had to trim the dividers to fit. I also print cards on regular paper and trim them. But, I don’t think this is working the best. I like copying and pasting long passages, but I find that I don’t get them printed and trimmed as quickly as I would just writing them on a card. I need to find a way to better incorporate this wonderful tool. Any ideas?

I just use a regular index card holder, think I got it at Walmart.  I haven’t put in some of the longer passages that we learned a while back…I think I’ll just paste them, and it might take 2 cards…not sure.  :)Gina

Same as Gina here. Just a regular index card holder. The dividers are slightly too tall, but not too tall that it won’t close. I may trim them in the future as our boxes get too full, but slanting them works for now. 🙂
