We’ve finally started using the SCM Scripture Memory System (love it!) One question. Do you wait for them to know the verse AND the reference before considering it memorized? My kids remember the verses pretty well, but even months later they still struggle with getting some of the references right. Thanks! Gina

I want them to know the references, so yes, I make sure they know that as well. But they say it each time before they say the verse. I’ve not seen them have a hard time with that. We just started up again with using the System. We did a few verses a while ago, but got out of the habit. I’m glad we’re working through it again!!

I haven’t really been requiring it in that they say the reference, but I do say, “Who knows (book, chapter, verse)?” And then one of them can say it, and we all repeat it. How do you get them to say the reference if they don’t know which one you’re asking for? (LOL That sounds funny… )

Ah, I see why we’ve been having trouble with the references. I label each verse topically (i.e. obedience, diligence, thankfulness, etc.) So they know the verse when I say the topic, but the references are slower coming:) I do want them to know them, so should probably strengthen that. Thanks! Gina

We do a three-to-one ratio.
1. The person with the card says the reference aloud to let the others know which verse we’re reciting.
2. Everyone says the reference together, then recites the verse.
3. Then repeats the reference at the end of the verse again.

We’ve been doing what Sonya posted.
My kids will ALWAYS remind me or their dad if we have forgotten the verse reference at the end. Actually, we usually don’t forget, but like in Uno, when someone is about to put down their second to last card and if they don’t say “Uno,” they have to draw two more…they’re just waiting for us to forget. At least we’ve hammered down that habit, now on to another:)

Great idea! I usually hold the card, but I think I’ll let them start passing them around—maybe the visual will help, too. Plus saying it 3x instead of one. Thanks a bunch:) Gina

Another visual help is verse cards with pictures. You could easily draw your own pictures on one side of your current cards, if you’d like. I use the foundations verse cards from Children Desiring God that have pictures on one side already. That visual has been a great learning tool, esp. for my younger ones.

I’ve not focused on the references much-but most of what we’ve worked on so far has been Isaiah’s Suffering Servant passage of chapters 52-53. I read the reference and then we say the verse together. On Fridays we recite the whole section. If I called out, “Who would like to recite v3?” They would be stumped for a bit. Hmmm…have to think about that…

I usually let the kid take turns going first, but I generally hold the card and say the verse or poem first. 😉 The only time they don’t know the reference is when I don’t reiterate it as we learn the verse. Shameful, but true.

I like the Children Desiring God verse pack too, and my kids love the pictures. Good visual cue.

Has anyone typed out the verses used in Steve Green’s 2 vol. CDs – Hide ’em in Your Heart? Something that could be printed on cardstock and cut out to fit into the 3×5 card box for SCM’s bible memory system? I was thinking of doing this, but wanted to check if anyone already had? Thanks!

Do you recommend using the Scripture memory cards for copywork? Does that help them memorize it faster?

Yes, I plan on using it for some of our copywork.
