Just wanted to give Sonya a big thank you for sharing her Scripture Memory System as part of the free SCM Curriculum Guide. Our family is now entering our third year of using it and we’re still going strong. It is the first time we have stuck with Bible memorization for this long, and I believe it is because it is laid out in such a ‘doable’ manner. Scripture memory is now one of our favorite times of the day.
Here’s a couple of extras that we have added to make the system even more interesting:
1) About once a week I ask whoever is reciting the verse to tell what it means to them personally, and
2) Also once a week, I give them a life situation and ask the kids to tell which one of our memory verses would appy to it.
I was just wondering what ages your children were when you started using the system? We haven’t begun yet but I am inspired after seeing you praise and have been thinking about getting organised to start beginning of next term.
We’ve actually had our children memorizing Scripture since they were about three years old. (A child’s ability to retain and recite information at this age is truly amazing!) We started the SCM Memory system when they were 5 and 7. My thougths are, the sooner the better. You will never regret hiding God’s Word in your heart.
We really do need to get organised, our children are 8 & 2. We have always read bible stories but never done deliberate Scripture Memory. So now is the time! Thanks for the info.
Just another thumbs up for the Scripture Memory System. We started using it in August. My two older kids, 12 and 8, have memorized almost all of verse pack 1. My 4 year old has also memorized many verses just by being in the room with us.
I have a question about the System. I want to start using it, but am wondering how to include my younger children as they get older. I have a 7yo, 5yo, 3yo, and 11-mth old. I can start using it with the older 3 (and myself!), but how do I fit in the baby once he’s old enough? I can’t just go back and start over to include him, right?
No, you need not start over, but just keep going. Every verse is reviewed a minimum of once per month and you’ll be surprised at what he picks up. If however, there is a passage or verse that you feel could use more than once per month, just move it back up to a daily or weekly spot for a while.
That’s the beauty of this system – the flexibility!
Thanks for your reply, Christie. Would this make it “boring” for the other kids to say it every day when they already know it? Or would they barely even notice? LOL I suppose it would depend on their ages, though.
BTW, where did everyone get their file box? I was at Walmart the other day, and it was nice and cheap, but the cards with the tabs didn’t fit! Couldn’t believe it. I think I will check out Target next time I’m out that way, but if anyone has any “tried and true” places, please let me know! TIA!
Ditto! I LOVE the SMS! We’ve only been using it for a couple of months, but I know it will be a part of our lives for years to come! I have a much more relaxed attitude about scripture memory now that I have a plan for long term retention. I can’t wait for our box to fill up!
I too love this sytem! We have been using it for about a year. I love how I am retaining the Word. I memorized alot of Scripture as a child, but fogot most of it. I love how I am able to recall things now. Even my 3 yr. old is catching on, since we do this at the breakfast table.
