Hi! As I plan for this next year, I am having a dickens of a time choosing what verses to memorize, and am wondering how you decide which ones to do.

My boys are 5 and 7, and I have not been very consistent with picking a set of verses and going with it. Some of the tools I like, and would like to use more consistently, are Seeds Family Worship CDs, Sing the Word from A to Z, Steve Green’s Hide ‘Em In Your Heart, used in conjunction with the SCM memory box system, which I love.

I guess I am afraid of missing the right ones, which is silly, I know, as God can use ALL Scripture for His glory.

All that to say, how do you decide?

We mainly use the verse pack ones: http://simplycharlottemason.com/planning/scmguide/scripture/

Sometimes I’ll add in a different verse or we work on memorizing things like The Lord’s Prayer or The Apostle’s Creed. I also write down verses in my commonplace book that I would like to get to…most of these are favorites written down after devotions or church readings.

We also enjoyed the Steve Green CD when my older ones were about that age.  There are some great verses there!

My selections are already chosen for me, in part, because I choose from one of the selections that will be read at Sunday Mass. The Catholic Church follows a three-year cycle of Bible readings.

I feel fortunate that I am able to do that, because it has an added benefit: my younger kids actually listen at mass to try find out when they’ll hear their “memory verse”!

My method probably won’t help you much. 😉 As Sunday School team leader I choose the memory verse for the whole childrens program based on the lesson which is based on the sermon topic. This summer we are doing Psalm 1.

When we don’t have a verse to work on through our church I have done John 3:16, The Lords Prayer, and Phillipians 4:8, etc.

We use the verse from our children’s Kidz Church program for the week.  As one of the leaders in know the references well enough in advance to be prepared for a few months ahead.

A number of years ago, our church magazine for children (The Friend) had a list of 12 scriptures for the children to memorize (one a month) – I found the list when I was first deciding, so I used those.

Then we also have 13 “Articles of Faith”, that my children are memorizing.  (I alternate a scripture with an article…)

I’m thinking we will add in the 10 commandments.

And the suggestion for the Lord’s Prayer is good, I’ll add that in too.

We have 4 main books of Scripture, and High School students study one a year in depth during their HS years in Seminary classes.  There are a list of scriptures for each one that they are supposed to memorize – but I think I read somewhere that they don’t want kids memorizing those before getting to Seminary.  I’m going to have to double check on that.  But even if that is the case, there used to be a LOT more memorized than there are now – so after I’ve done the above, I do have the old seminary scripture mastery lists, so I’ll pick from there.

I’ve been using this as my guide:

Not sure how I stumbled upon it, but it’s been useful for me.

I’ve recently switched to trying to do passages, instead of one or two verses.  It takes us longer, but I feel like they’re getting some of the context that way; and soaking up the rich poetry-like writing (we’re using KJV for memorizing just because of it’s lyrical-ness).

Sometimes we put what we’re memorizing on the back burner and go with what the Sunday School teachers are doing.

What an interesting question! I probably need to have a better method or source. Ours are picked sporadically, usually based on something we are reading like a Millers story or Child’s Book of Character Building or from our daily Bible readings. I would like to get more organized and do a verse pack though. I have done some short passages like James 1:19,20 & Ephesians 6:1-3; because I like them together.

HollyS shared almost exactly what I do. I do throw in some verses that pertain to Biblical holidays at those times during the year, but otherwise, we use the SCM Scripture memory list. When we were using the Child’s Book of Character books, I used the verses for the week’s character trait study.
