I have a current 10th grader that will need to complete a hs credit of world history over the next two years. If I use SCM, can anyone think of a way that I could make this work? We have used Modules 4 and some of 5 while she was in 8th and 9th and this year she is doing Notgrass American History. What if she did portions of Modules 1-3 next year, then the following year 4-6 pulling out any American History in Modules 5 & 6? This plan seems like I’d be pulling the modules apart, but I can’t think of any other way to do it. Perhaps using Notgrass World History as a spine over the two years, but choosing some of the modules to go alongside?
Thanks for the link…I think I may have seen that one. The more I think about it, the more I think that I won’t be able to use SCM for my oldest, but can do it with my younger three. I’m thinking I may use Notgrass World History for her, skip the readings and assignments and have her do some of the history readers for the 10-12 grade level in the modules that the others are using for the next two years.
So I’ve been mulling this over, and I think I may have an idea…
Instead of using just any other one year HS World History program, if I really wanted to use SCM suggested books, I came up with a possible plan.
Ideally, I would like to do this in one year, then her senior year, she could do Economics and Government. So for 11th grade, I divide the year up in three terms. Schedule the base study books (Material World, What the World Eats, Discovering Doctrine, etc.). Then go through each module and pick 2-3 books for a 6 week span (2 modules per term), then I can be pulling 12 books from all the modules to cover world history in a very broad sweep. I know…not very CM, but she would be doing that anyway if she used a different one year HS world history course. But at least I’d be choosing from these great books. (She’s done a good part of Modules 5 & 6, so I don’t have to glean much from those). Again, I know that I’d be thinning the SCM modules out tremendously, but her year would still be filled with great books going through world history. Any thoughts?
What are everyone’s absolute-must-read-in-this-module books from the 10-12 grade sections? I may start a thread specifically for this question!
Thank you gals for replying! I was beginning to think it was a totally crazy idea!
I think I may start a new thread and ask for opinions of their “must reads” in the 10-12 grade sections in the modules. I think if I can’t pull this idea together, I may just use Notgrass World History…but I do have a little time before September to “invent this wheel”!
