Those of you using the SCM Organizer, do you use a paper planner as well?  I haven’t had much success with a straight paper planner, but I’m confused as to how enter lesson plan details beyond division and study method in the organizer.  I understand that there is no way to determin order, so I am guessing there is no way to divide between stuff done independently and stuff done with me.  Some of our resources are done both ways depending on the day/activity or lesson.  So what do you do to make notes for yourself as to how or when something should be done?

I just started my free trial yesterday after finally getting internet service the day before. I’ve been a paper planner forever. While the CMO appeals to me, I’m seeing that I won’t give up paper planning. I really like the reports options, but I’m thinking the CMO will be super useful during the day. It will be an after the fact accountability tool. Paper is portable. I like being able to move around while we’re learning. Somehow, my aging brain works better with old fashioned paper in my hands. ;0)

I have a daily/weekly routine printed out and kept in a page protector in the front of my paper planning binder. That’s what keeps us on track each day. I took ideas from the various schedule suggestions on the SCM site and tweaked it according to our children’s needs and our other than school activities.

I’m hoping to see more uses for the CMO at our house. Right now, it’s taking me a very long time to enter our resources. Wow! We use quite a few things that aren’t in the Bookfinder. But, I’m hopeful that once I get everything entered, things will run more smoothly when I use it.

I enter resources that I do with them as a family and the resources they do individually under each students name (or account, if you will). Sometimes I simply list the books under both family and individuals to account for the togetherness of a lesson, yet separate individual work. It makes for a longer printed report, but seems to help keep my required records more accurate. 😉

What it does not do is allow you to physically move the order of your subjects within the daily list.  This really is no problem for me, since I have a paper graph for the week with all my subjects listed for each day we are doing them. It includes family work and each childs schedule and I just use that as my daily subject order and mark it done on my printout as we do them.

My kids use their SCMO checkoff lists to choose what and when to do their daily tasks.

It’s also possible to add a custom study method to note whether or not the resource should be used independently. You can do something like “Read and narrate with Mom” or “Read independently.” Those methods show up on the assignment in the Daily Plan.

I am aware that I could customize the method, but sometimes I want the method to change from day to day.  Maybe I would have to enter the resource more than once, like Spelling with mom Mon and Fri, independent Tues to Thurs.  I would love it if I could put a division between morning and afternoon work.  Could you separate it by adding independent work and guided work as if they were two different students, but I guess that would mess up reports.  And how do you enter projects and due dates?

I love the accountability the organizer provides, and putting end of the year reports together would be a breeze.  I’ve just got to wrap my head around it all.

You could schedule the resource twice for the same student with the days you outlined. You can even use the division selector to choose which lessons you want to be done with you and which should be done independently.

And how do you enter projects and due dates?

I’m not sure what you mean by projects. Could you explain? We don’t have due dates right now, but it’s on our wish list.
