Which one did you pick and why? Those of you who have or had Grades 3 and under, would you do the Early Modern SCM or Beautiful Feet Early American History? Why or why not? I can’t make up my mind on which one to go with! Thanks for your thoughts:)
I have used SCM and BF products with a range of ages. I’ve also had years where I do my own history planning. Here are my thoughts:
1. Are you interested in questions about the readings, activity or notebook suggestions, etc? BF’s guide has those sorts of things. SCM does not (because the emphasis is on letting the child make connections and having them narrate).
2. Do you want a specific day to day schedule? SCM’s guide does this, telling you exactly what to read each day. BF’s guide gives you a weekly page that tells you what to cover that week but doesn’t break it down by day for you.
3. Which book list appeals to you more? I suggest looking at samples of each book you are unfamiliar with online or through a library.
I chose BF Early American for grades k-3. I liked having the kids keep a notebook with it, which was mainly coloring or drawing a picture related to the book we read and copywork. I used a primary composition book with wide lines on bottom half of the page and a place to draw at the top. It is a nice keepsake. BF also added some Scripture and discussions on character traits. Many of the books are the same as SCM, like the d’Aulaire biographies. I liked scheduling our week at a relaxed pace. The next year, we did SCM module six Modern and enjoyed this too. We really liked Stories of America vol 2. We did not read all of Stories of the Nations vol 2 at those grades. I look forward to reading it next time.
