OurJourney – Switching should be no problem, just choose where you want to pick up and go for it next year.  Perhaps begin in Module 4 (Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation) so you don’t repeat the ancients after spending this year on them with SOTW?  We actually went from learning about 1840’s through WWI last year to Middle Ages this year.  It is a time period we’d skipped in the past and held some interest to my children, so that’s where we jumped in this year with SCM.  It’s been a lot of fun so far!

One tip – start looking for the books ahead of time (they’re listed by age group in the free sample of the SCM history handbook for module 4).  I got many through paperback swap or inexpensive used copies on Amazon in the year leading up to now, so when we were ready to begin we only had to buy some of them new.  Now my paperback swap wish list has the books we’ll need for next year’s module and many will trickle in over the waiting months.

This is our first year hs’ing, and DD6 is doing well with it.  We are doing Module 1.  We had a rough start, but I slowed down and added some hands-on activities for Sumer and Ancient Mesopotamia.  We’ll do the same with Ancient Egypt.  She loved making the salt dough map of Egypt!  I also found a video on Mesopotamia at the library that was really good, and DD wanted to watch it over and over.  I’m tickled to find there are sequels to the other ancients.

DD is improving in her narration which was the main struggle at the beginning.  I love that we are studying Bible and world history together.  It really helps to understand the Bible better.

This is our first year using all CM methods. We are using the SCM history Module 1. So far, we LOVE it! So much more interesting than using traditional methods.

I’ve been using the Online Organizer since 2007 & using the History suggestions but this is the first year that we bought and are following a History Module. We’ve homeschooled since before my 16 yo was born. I started in 1984 with my now 32 yo who is currently homeeschooling a K with this organizer at her house. She loves it too by the way.

Anywho, we are using HM #3 Matthew – Acts with Ancient Rome. We are loving it. Just Christy and I so we are going much faster. She is 16 and we read all the younger books when she was younger. Each day we do a Bible lesson and a History lesson plus a Geography lesson every other day. So the first week we finished two weeks worth. We are studying Latin too so it all fits together nicely. She has already finished reading Beric the Briton. She got ahead of me because I also work part time 20 hours a week and go to college too. Busy life but interesting.

We used Mod 1 and 2 and are using Mod 3 this year and I really enjoy the simplicity of it. I love love love just reading the bible! And then adding some extras to learn about Egypt, Greece, and Rome. I try to get extra books from the library. the Famous Books of Rome and Greece are not my faves with the talk of false gods so much so I prefer reading them for free online at:

We do our geography on Wednesdays. We still read a passage from the scriptures those days ie. Job for our literature in the evenings or a passage that goes with our science from Considering God’s Creation book.

The less stress the better for me, so SCM History Modules are perfect for us! I like how everything is laid out for me and I can easily see what books I need to order and read from weekly/monthly.

We use a narration cube which makes narration more fun for my girls!

What are these geo puzzles you ladies speak of? Laughing

Tara – Puzzles here – super great for the ones that aren’t writing well yet.

I’d love to know are you reading the Famous Men at all or just some stories or what are you supplementing?  We have the ones from Yesterday’s classics on my Kindle, so I”m not going to repurchase the specific edition suggested by SCM, but I have a daughter that is very sensitive to false gods (she asked me to stop reading a section on the Egyptian afterlife the other day and I thought it was because she was bored so I told her I wouldn’t skip, but as I was reading she put her hands over her ears, so I asked her what was wrong and she told me it gives her bad thoughts about it being true!  Cry  Needless to say, I STOPPED!!!  Poor sweetie.)  So I am a little concerned going into Module 2 in a couple of weeks – those greeks were almost worse than the Egyptians!

We are using Module 1. I have been using Classical Christian Ed. model and am rapidly transitioning to CM model. I have a 5th grade boy, 1st/2nd grade boy, and two little girls. We have cycled through history once, so I chose to start at the beginning again! We have been enjoying it so far. Change can be difficult, so I’m trying not to get too stressed out while I work out the kinks. We are about 6 weeks into Term 1.

We are reading Famous Men of Rome but skip over the parts that are in detail of the gods. Thanks, Rebekah!

We are using Mod 1 for the first time this year! We just started 2 weeks ago and we are LOVING IT!!!

@artcmomto3, What hands-on activites are you adding in? I looked at the links section and we are going to do the salt dough map and the shaduf. My dd would love some hands-on activites. 🙂

We are in the middle of mod 1 and loving it as well.  I plan on using them all.  For hands on things, I found this site from the forum and it has always had rave reviews.  =)

For added hands-on activities we have made a lapbook using History Pockets – http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1557999007 -and for extra fun activities we are using Ancient Egyptians and Their Neighbors – http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1556523602.  Oh, my DD loves puzzles!  I will definitely have to get the one on Africa/Middle East.  She is having a hard time remembering the countries she labels from week to week, and doing a puzzle would def. give her practice and allow her hands to touch and manipulate them.

BTW, the salt dough map was fun!  Her favorite part was painting it. 🙂

I ordered the Europe Geopuzzle from Amazon here:

    http://www.amazon.com/GeoToys-4102371-GeoPuzzle-Europe/dp/B000K3A1JW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316054360&sr=8-1

and this one is only $7.25 with free shipping (no minimum order).

Wouldn’t you want to skp about the false gods when the children are younger, but then read about them the next rotation when the children are older?

Sarah, with my super sensitive one, we’ll see how it goes, I’m not going to skip over anything in the Bible, but since she is troubled by it, I really don’t have any problem with her NEVER learning it.  I don’t think it’s very important to go into detail, other than to just say, “they worshiped false gods” or “the egyptians enslaved people to build huge monuments to their Pharoahs because they believed their Pharoahs were gods – isn’t that terrible?”

But is there an important reason I’m missing why we need to go into more detail?

    Thanks!
