I have been using Trail Guides for Learning in US History. We are ready to move on and go to World History. I have looked into History Revealed by Diane Waring but I fear this may be too difficult level for my 1st and 5th grade, it also does not provide a list of Living Books which my daughter loves.
My question is it practical to use SCM first 2 books Genesis to Ancient Egypt and Joshua to Greeks into one school year? Are there hands on crafts that are given in these books? Or will I need to find it on my own?
I can speak to History Revealed as we just finished using a year of it. Yes, it would be too much for just a 1st and 5th grader. (I used it with 9th, 5th, 4th, 2nd, 1st, varying what each child did based on age/ability). There are book lists in every chapter of it, on a variety of topics, but it is heavy on the non fiction. 😉
I know some families have done two guides in one year. I think they either sped up the reading schedule (doing 1 guide in half a year, 2 days worth of assignments at a time) or they picked some of the books and left out others so they ended up with about 1 full year worth of books, a mix of the 2 modules book lists. The guides do not have activities BUT if you go to their listing in the SCM store and click on the Links and Tips tab near the description you’ll find a link to a page of extras including hands on activity suggestions.
We will be finishing up our first year of the SCM Bible/History/Geography soon. I ended up adding a good bit of Story of the World because I felt the main history text for the Genesis to Deuteronomy book was a tad too much for my 1st grader (although I found it incredibly useful for me!).
I could certainly see doing two of the books in one year with appropriate modifications. The Bible text reading is often very short, so you could do 2 or more in one sitting. The Geography day usually takes us a good 45 minutes now that we are into labeling 40 countries in Africa! But it didn’t take that long in the beginning. I’ve already looked at the 2nd year geography, Visits to the Middle East, and there just aren’t that may countries, so it won’t be nearly as time-consuming. You could choose to leave out the “Visits” lessons, which use Hungry Planet and Material World. These are often deep. Maybe just review the photos and share just a few of the stand-out points?
Anyway, I’m saying all that to say that you could definitely do it! We have really loved the material and look forward to continuing it next year!
We have combined all 3 ancients this year for first grade. We read through the whole Bible regularly already, so we chose to leave out those sections & only do the “world history” parts. We also have not been using the recommended geography studies…I’ve just been printing & laminating blank maps & teaching him the areas we are reading about, then having him remember & label them. We usually work on this about once a week. We also have Hungry Planet & Material World, but mostly we just look at the pictures relating to where we’re studying & talk about them. In later years we will add more formal geography, and at some point we may do “Bible history” as a separate subject, just so he can make the timeline connections to what we’ve learned. We are doing it this way because I really wanted 4 year history cycles. I don’t have my planner in front of me, but I think it worked out to be 6 or 8 weeks of Egypt, then 11 or 12 weeks of Greece, and same for Rome. It hasn’t felt rushed to me, and we’ve been doing lots of hands-on things with each module.
