Those who use the SCM History modules and guides, do you purchase all the books, or try to get as many as you can from the library? There is a lot of stuff that is needed to purchase and I’m just curious as to how others use the modules and keep it on the cheap!
I purchase, mostly used. My daughter is the only one school-age right now, so we decided to make more of an investment financially with her, but to buy non-consumable stuff so that as the rest of the kids come up we’re not going to have much cost. I find having the book on my shelf before the school year starts, not having to worry about holds, availability and due dates is a huge stress reliever for me. I make great use out of my library for my leisure reading, or previewing what books I can before purchasing, but in the end I just prefer to have it here on my shelf. I have a goal of one day having a lending library as well (I do this on a small scale now), so for me it’s worth it to purchase.
We are getting ready to use Module 1 and I decided to purchase ALL of the books. Most I found used via Amazon…all in excellent condition and a few I got new. I ordered them all over the course of 6 weeks or so so that it was not all at once. I’m not positive but, I’m thinking Material World, Hungry Planet and Bible Maps may all be used in other modules as well. And since my son is 5 years younger than his sister I know that the 1st grade specific ones will get even more use when we repeat the module later on. I guess I would have to add a few more books for my daughter at that point since she would then be at the 7th/8th grade level.
We purchased the ones we would be using over and over (chapter and reference books), some on this site and some on Amazon… as many as I could find used. Of course, we also bought the ones our library system doesn’t have. The shorter one-time-reading books (like The True Story of Noah’s Ark) we will get from the library.
I started out planning on using the history reading schedule through AO, but I don’t know, something about it I’m not liking so much anymore, so I’m thinking of going with SCM for history, but exhausted our school book budget, so was looking for advice on how you all did it! 🙂 I think I will try and buy over time, or when I see a good price on something that I need!
I often carry a list of books that I’ll be wanting to use (from 1-12, so it was a BIG project to do, and of course is subject to change) and then if I’m at a library book sale, thrift store, used book store etc and see something, even if it’s for grade 9 when my oldest is in grade 1, I’ll still buy it if it’s a steal (like $.50 or $1).
I use the library as much as a I can. Since I can search their catalog online, I check what they have and then order what I am not able to find. (Actually, I check the library in our town, the one in the neighboring town where my brother lives, and I check the library at the middle school in our town since my mother works there. Only if I can’t find it in one of those three placed do I order).
