I am planning to use Simply Charlotte Mason, Genesis through Deuteronomy & Ancient Egypt, for my son’s first grade History, Geography, and Bible. Has anyone started this program at first grade? I am just wondering if it might be too much for a first grader? Should I postpone until second grade?
I know you can tailor anything to suit your needs, but just wanted people’s personal experiences. We are doing a light kindergarten year with lots of reading. My son does enjoy history and can sit down and listen for long periods of time.
My 1 st grade boy liked it, but his little sis did not. So I ended up swapping to the Vos children’s Bible and A child’s history of the world and an usborne world history for pictures to look at. We still read from Ancient Egypt and her neighbors some and enjoyed Boy of Pyramids and the other k-3 read alouds. I never did the commentary readings. Also I did not really like the story of the Greeks and story of the romans books…another reason for switching.
If you like the Greek and Roman books I’d say go for it. Just realize that a tag along might not work;)
When my oldest was in 1st grade we started with SCM Early American/World history guide. There is more variety of books for the 1st-3rd/family group and we really enjoyed it.
You can start with ancient, but I really liked starting with American because it was a bit more “relatable” for my kidos (there was also a preK tag along and baby) and it was a great year!
Thanks for the info! I didn’t consider starting with another time period, but that’s something I will consider now. Did you continue with the other time periods in the SCM series?
Thanks for your response! I was wondering about the commentary…if we proceed with SCM, I will not use it. It sounds like I should do a little more research, but very helpful to hear your 1st grade son liked it. I also looked into the Vos Bible, so thanks!
Yes, we continued with SCM history just started at a different time period and did them in an order that worked for us. We did:
Early American/World
Modern American/World
Renaissance & Reformation
went back to Early American/World (but it really was almost all new because my oldest did not retain that much in 1st grade and this time she was in 4th grade so had new books to read)
Modern American/World
and just now made it to Ancients 🙂
If you have multiple children they will not all start at the beginning so I decided to give myself permission to start in a time period that I thought would be most interesting to the kids and me 🙂
We are doing ancients this year with 6th, 4th, 1st and it is going really well but my oldest are making a lot more of the “connections” than my 1st grader. For us Ancients is better suited for a bit older, but every family is different. Do what works for you and your kids 🙂
Thanks again!!! That is a lot of help. I don’t have multiple kids, so it makes the decision process a little easier. I am definitely going to look over all the books and plans and consider starting out of order. I was kinda stuck planning around chronological order…
